It means the update didn't apply correctly or there was interference during download. You need to grab a micro usb cable and restore in iTunes

Indeed. There are two options: bring your Apple TV to your local Apple store (best to schedule a visit in advance) and let them do it or get hold of a USB - micro USB cable ($15 at Radio Shack) and do it yourself. I bought the cable and did it myself. It's all fine now. Unplug the Apple TV from your TV set and from the power and connect it to your computer. Open iTunes. Select AppleTV device. Select restore. Note: it will erase prior data, so make sure you have your wifi network access info and your iTunes ID. Once you reconnect your AppleTV to your TV set, you will have to set all that up again.

Awesome news. Spending my money and time to fix something that should have been fine. Are we sure apple designed this and not microsoft.

The cable is cheap, it doesn't take much time and this would have been caused by something on your end.

Agreed. But it has happened to a few people already.

Add me to the list of failed updates. Now I have to buy a cable I will probably never have another use for. I disagree that it was something on "my end" as the download completed and it was during the install that it went belly up and the Itunes/USB cable image displayed. Pretty obvious to me there's a clitch on Apple's end.

Apple will take care of it for free at an Apple store near you even if your AppleTV is out of warranty, since it is an Apple-recommended update that caused the freeze. But service at an Apple store can mean having to wait, which is why I preferred to buy the cable. No doubt you can get such a cable online for much less than $15. You'd have to wait for delivery, but it comes straight to your door. So there are a few options here for solving quickly and cheaply an annoying but truly minor problem.

It's a small group who seem to experience this issue and more often than not the cause is something on the users end. However, if you feel it is on their end provide feedback.
As far as the cable, if you are really against purchasing one then just take it in so someone can restore the unit.

Pretty thin. How can it be something on my end? Cable modem into Airport Extreme all wireless; never had a problem before this update. I run 6 apple TV boxes, so I should probably take the chance and update the other 5. Hmmm, let me think. Logic says same end results for each one. USB icon on screen. Waiting for an answer from apple. I'll post reply.

It could have been a slight hiccup on your network, that's all it takes. Very few people have had this happen so I highly doubt you would have that result. Have you contacted Apple directly? You won't be getting a response here.

You guys are way too nice. A lot like the guy who last night sent me a message saying I was an idiot. Clearly he works for Apple. First he said open your eyes - there is a USB port... it is a mini USB port - so which one of us does nto have eyes. Only microsoft would build a device that would only hook into another apple device with a BLACKBERRY!!! cable... seriously - this is all the guys at apple support could suggest (or a cannon or some other manufacturer).. Of course all the cables I have here for apple phones and computers and ipads wont work.. and this guy who wrote me back said I was the idiot..
Stop being nice to Apple. You guys should be blasting them for such a stupid and idiotic mistake. You should not be making giving them a break for putting in a port for a cable THEY DO NOT EVEN SUPPORT... everyone of you would blast and laugh at microsoft for this... think about it...

Most do not have any issue. These cables tend to be lying around or you can get for cheap online should you need, they aren't only for blackberry.. The support guy was a bit rude, it happens, but no need to get bent out of shape
