Hi Spyd4r, Im not 100% sure that's correct, I've swapped my phone 3 times due to battery issues and the one I have now seems much better, it clocked 7 hours of usage yesterday and 18.5 hours at standby before dying, I have everything turned on, notifications, 2 push emails, LTE, bluetooth, wireless, 50% brightness and 49 apps installed including skype, flickr, facebook, ebay, viber etc this is nearly double the 3.5 - 4 hours i was getting with my first 3 phones

I just took it off the charger now and will post again tomorrow to advise if the battery issues have returned but it does feel like the problem is both software and hardware related

Is this 7 hours of usage you received from your first 100% full charge?  If so, the numbers will be skewed.

My battery probably charges from 1-10% to full in about a couple of hours. Is that considered a fast recharge? I just wish iOS 6.0.1 comes out before my 14 day return is over .. C'mon apple.

The Apple Senior Advisor I spoke with told me that a full recharge takes 3 to 5 hours if the battery is drained to less than 5%. Mine was doing it in 15 to 20 minutes.

everyone is getting 4.5 hours of use.. that's basically the golden number... some people a little more, some lower... but 4-5 hours is basically it.. this phone is a joke right now. I hope no one is using this phone for business use.

I get about 8 hours or so a day.  LTE off, Push email, auto brightness turned on, but set low

This is my usage right now, it's a bit padded because I did listen to music for about 45-60 minutes or so, but it also includes about 75 mins of wifi phone calls using a BT head set.

    I originally came to this forum because I was concerned that my battery life might be suspect I wasn't documenting anything at the time, so I can't say for certain that any of these things *definately* solve the problem, but here's the actions I've taken;

I reset my phone as new, as recommended by some sites going back to at least the 4S as a possible cause of battery drain

I did two consectutive drain to zero cycles,

I called ATT support to discuss the low signal I've receive at home because I've always had drainage issues going back to my first cell due to signal issues.  I didn't say anything releated to battery drain, I just asked him to force a tower update to my phone.  He had me cycle the power a couple of times and I think he may have checked to see if my phone was registering on the network properly.  I wish I had asked him more questions now so I could share.

Lastly, I noticed something on Apples testing methodology page.  For all the tests they conducted auto join networks is turned off.  The  constant polling for networks would make sense as a cause of drainage.  I'm not to crazy about this one, and I'm going to try some experiments soon to see if it makes any impact turning it back on.

That said, there is one variable we all have in common which is the cellular signal itself.  From what I've seen on this board nearly everyone who has tried experimenting with turning off the cell radio has seen usage in line with what Apple claims, that being 10 hours for WiFi browsing.  Given that there are plenty of posts related to people having similar issues after upgrading a 4 or 4S to iOS 6 seems to point very strongly to a software issue, not hardware.  Seems to me to be a power management issue some how connected to how the phone deals with signal strengh/issues.  As noted by post earlier, the first upgrade to iOS 5 came out about a month after the 4S debuted.  I'm hoping to hear an annoucement on the 23rd and that it will address this flaw

For those having issues I truely hope you can work them out,

I've just noticed that Skype is a real battery killer! Take a look at these figures:

timeusagestandbybatteryusage since laststandby since last% usagenotes
    12:1703:2404:5380% Started monitoring
    13:0304:0005:3977%00:3600:4678%Killed Skype
    13:4204:0706:1877%00:0700:3918%Some time later…

At 1217 I noticed that my usage figure was very high considering I had hardly used the phone, and remembered I had opened and logged into Skype the previous evening for the first time since setting up my iPhone 5, so wondered if it was the culprit.

So, with Skype running for 46 mins between 1217 and 1303 usage was 78% of standby and battery drop was 3%.

I killed Skype at 1303, and 39 mins later at 1342 I measured again - only 18% usage in last 39 mins and 0% battery drop.

It might be different if Skype was offline in the background, but in Settings > Skype mine was set to never go offline. (NB. When you reboot Skype starts again and comes back online)

So definitely check Skype isn't running!

I've been reading this post for couple days now. And I'm on my 4th iPhone 5 replacement. Battery seem to be getting worse and worse. with almost everything off ( location service; icloud; push notifications;vibration; etc) and I'm still only getting max 4 hours of usage. I've done normal restore, DFU restore, basically nothing worked.  and last time went to genius bar, the 'genius' told me that I've already had too many replacements and they won't offer me another one, also told me that's what a iPhone 5 would offer me for the usage. simply by now I just ******* give up on this phone, back to use my old iPhone 4 and 4s. so disappointed

3% battery drop after 46minutes with anything running is still very good performance.   That's ~~1% every 15min which would yield you 25 hours!   What am I missing here?

I have a new 5 and a 4 (not s) I had both set side by side with exactly the same settings apart from the 4 had iOS 5 , the result was the 5 ran out hours before the 4 .i up graded the 4 to iOS 6 and it still lasted around an hour longer than the 5 . I do hope apple sort this problem out as the say the 5 has a longer life than the 4 ,well it doesn't ! . Needs sorting ASAP or here I come Samsung

    Applying some common sense here:

    1. Batteries in both phones are NEARLY identical.   Not quite, but close enough to call it even.
    2. The i5 has a more powerful processor
    3. The i5 has an LTE chip, which clearly requires more power to run.

What do you really expect to find with a side-by-side comparison?

That being said, with reasonable usage and a significant amout of time on wifi, I easily am getting 8+ hours of usage from a charge, each and every day.   For those of you getting 4-5 hours, I can only siuggest pressing APPLE for exchanges and/or refunds.

There's something seriously wrong with a company that says "You've had too many replacements ... this is the usage you're going to get".... 4 hours?!?! I'm sorry... if they really don't exchange the phone until some how miraculously you get one that actually WORKS then I have no words... They shouldn't say ANYTHING! They should say "This phone is only getting 4 hours of use...That's not right....Heres a brand new phone"  OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL ITS RIGHT.  A cut off at how many exchanges you do because of clearly defective phones??  Again, .... no words.

    Tim Penreath,

Thank you very much for the info on skype. I didn't realize it ran in the background even when the app is closed. I used skpe

and my battery has been draining like crazy on standby ever since!

I made the changes in settings and I will retest my phone. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey guys, I have some more great info for you.

As I stated earlier, I picked up a new for 4S yesterday with iOS 5.  I have both the for S and the iPhone five in my possession and I've been running tests on them side-by-side.  On Wi-Fi and with cellular data shut off on the iPhone five, both run identical.

On Wi-Fi, with both phones in the same state, the iPhone five runs the battery down a bit harder.... Say 8% more over ten hours.

With this data, I am absolutely certain that its cellular data related, The iPhone five drains the battery WAY faster than than the 4s.

Pure Marketing Hype.   I have never owned a cell phone that lived up to the manufacturer's battery life claims.
