In my humble opinion Apple goes too far with this thing. I updated to OS6 and suddenly my device started to use iMessage without any warning. Results: I lost a message since the receiving party was travelling with no data. Then I lost a customer who did not want to answer to my SMS because he did not see who was sending it. I find really humiliating if my phone vendor starts to fiddle with my device.... Apple is good but not the center of the world.
Now the problem solved, I found where to switch this stupid iMessage off.

iMessage working fine. Read a manual to learn how to use it. But if you don't need it don't use it. That's not make iMessage stupid...

I recently purchased the iPhone 3GS, and I'm having the biggest problem with the iMessage. I have the latest version of software, however, when I go to activate the iMessage, it's not giving me the option of my phone number. I logged out of my apple id & back in, and it asked where I wanted to send/recieve messages from, i unchecked the email option and selected my phone number, however, it says it's waiting for activation... HELP!

Is the "Send as SMS" option ON? If not turn it ON and turn off iMessage. Force Restart your iPhone. (Hold down home and power button at the same time and keep holding until Apple logo appears.
When its restart try to turn ON iMessage and wait a minute to see "Verified".
If this is not work call your carrier.
iMessage Activation needs a cellular network to send an SMS to iMessage centre.
Maybe something block this SMS.
Sorry for my English

Try with a diffrenet sim, if it gets activated then your phone setting is ok, otherwise
1. restart iphone, switch off and then on
2. sceck timezone, if not ok correct it
3. reset network setting under settings>general>reset
4. toggle imessage on (ensure you hv sufficient balance in your ac for atleast a international shotcode SMS that iMessage sent for activation
5. if problem is not solved contact your carrier and ask them to unblock the UK number starting with 0044 that is being sent out from your phone for activation of iMessage..
all the best,

Hey everyone im a new person to this but whoever is having this problem i just solved it. For some i believe it will work , if not try something else. Best of luck!
1. Turn on iMessage and leave it upto 24 hours on. Mine was 2hrs
2. After that time a caller id option should show, click it and only chppse your number. Log out of your apple id and it should work! :)

Hi everyone, I'm expirencing similar problems, My Imessage went out earlier today and i called apple tech support and the gentleman said they were doing updates and it should be back soon. It came back, but my IMessages are only sending through my email. Now, when i go into my settings>Messages>iMessage> the list shows up as the following:
Send Read Receipts
Send as SMS
Send & Receive
When i click Send and Receive, My email shows up, bolded with a check mark, and my phone number also shows up, but is is faded, and i can not click on it.
I have tried logging out of my Apple ID, to see if my number would bold itself and i would be able to use it, and no such luck. if i unregister my email it says "waiting for activation" and then finally says "activation unsuccessful." i've tried turning my phone off, making sure my phone number is listed under "mobile numbers" through my Apple ID, and i've tried logging out of my Apple ID.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?! it is driving me insane!
I can either send an iMessage through my email, or just send a regular SMS through my number.
Anyone have any idea?!

Easy, when you send a text, did you notice your text background was blue or green? If it was blue, then you're using iMessage, however, if it is green, then it's regular SMS messaging
