Q: Why doesn't iMessage let me screen share over AIM?

Hey guys,

Here is my problem, ever since I updated my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion it originally came with Lion I was able to share my screen on iChat over AIM. Now I am no longer able to do that, also on the very top bar where the wifi logo is and the battery life and other icons it's suppose to come out a little message bubble everytime iMessage is open and it's not up there. I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion and that didn't work and as I type this I'm trying to repair disk on disk utility but I don't know if that's going to help.

Please if anyone knows of a solution to my problem, please give me a hand. Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Hi,

The Menu Bar Icon one is the easiest.

Go to Messages > Preferences > General Section

Tick the top box  (Show Status In Menu Bar)

DO you mean you can Screen Share over Bonjour or Jabber (GoogleTalk) ?

Can you Audio Only or Video Chat over an  AIM Buddy list ?

Screen Sharing is actually an Audio Chat+

The Bit rate needed (Internet Speed) is about 3 times the normal Audio needs though.

This brings it in to line with a 1-1 Video chat at minimum speeds  (Around 128kbps)

I would speed test your service
    http://www.speedtest.net/

You need to have that Speed as Upload as well as download  (Mbps are faster still)

0.7Mbps is roughly around 700kbps  (that is using base 10 where as the maths is actually based on multiples of 2)

You also need to check the Video Menu in Messages  to ensure Screen Sharing is Enabled.

If it is and it is greyed out it wll be about speed.

Check the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) and the Capabilities tab.
Starting up Messages at teh same time as the computer may cause Messages to record the wrong Internet Speed.

The Speed test should be done when the computer is not doing anything elese such as a download.

Other computers, Games Consoles and even Mobile Phones can influence how much speed the computer then has (Then called Bandwidth if the connection is shared)
