Moving items to trash suddenly requires password

Moving anything to the trash all of sudden results in a window that says “Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this.”

Typing my password then deletes the item immediately without the opportunity to empty the trash.

The most recent OS update was Apple Java 2012-006 from a few days ago. This problem started after that I believe.

Disk Utility says the HD is OK and repairing permissions and restarting did not fix this problem. I’ve seen possible solutions posted elsewhere that involve using the terminal but I’m a little leery about that. Anyone know a less risky method?

Thanks for any help!
