Q: Crashing iMac

Hi

My iMac keeps crashing for some reason. Especially when using iTunes and iPhoto in conjunction with iPhone/iPad.

E.g. when downloading updates to apps in iTunes it may freeze up completely and I have to force shut down by holding the power button.

Anyway this is the latest crash report from today. I don't know how to read these, but maybe someone can help out?

Appreciate any help on this issue. I'm suspecting motherbord or RAM issues?

Thanks

    I doubt it.

Uninstall Soundflower. It is a third party system audio modification that appears frequently in crash reports. Make certain that it is really gone.

When I search in Finder I can't seem to find soundflower. Do you know the exact location of it?
    Thanks

The best way to delete it is to use its manufacturer's uninstaller program. Soundflower's various bits could be in several locations, but there are a finite number of them.

Where did you obtain it, and what is it supposed to do? If in doubt, download it again, and run its uninstaller program, assuming it has one.

After running the uninstaller (I don't think anything was removed because it was already uninstalled) I restarted the iMac, installed SoundFlower, and ran the uninstaller script once again. Restarted, then tried to download all app updates available in iTunes (this usually makes the iMac freeze up). And it did. After downloading about 10-15 updates it froze up...

After removing CleanMyMac software it seems to run smoothly. Finally...

Just as a posted this it froze up again while downloading app updates...

CleanMyMac has been known to remove system components that must not be removed. This may have happened to your system. See these posts:

How to restore from Time Machine Backup?

Uninstalled Lion AppStore, Need it back!

I recommend you restore your system from a backup known to be intact. If you do not have a backup, then boot OS X Recovery and reinstall OS X. This does not destroy your user accounts or data.

Reinstalling OS X does not remove potentially harmful software such as CleanMyMac or potentially conflcting software such as Soundflower though. The good news is that I have heard CleanMyMac's uninstaller actually works, so if that is how you removed it, it's probably gone.

On the other hand I found out that Soundflower's uninstaller does not completely eradicate it. You may need to perform an exhaustive search-and-destroy mission to rid your system of all its components. Look for it in all of the following locations:

Look for Soundflower in your Applications folder, as well as in each of the locations in the list that follows. Drag it to the Trash wherever you find it:

    /Library

    /Library/Application Support

    /Library/Bundles

    /Library/Caches

    /Library/Extensions

    /Library/Frameworks

    /Library/Preferences

    /System/Library/Extensions

    /System/Library/LaunchAgents

    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    ~/Library

    ~/Library/Application Support

    ~/Library/Caches

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

    ~/Library/Preferences

    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost

At the conclusion of each of these search-and-destroy missions, reboot your Mac and determine if the problem is solved. If not, repeat the search to determine if you overlooked something - or worse, if a running process recreated a file you are trying to delete.

Never install CleanMyMac or any other third party app claiming to "clean", "optimize", or perform other such magical feats. Without exception, they will do the opposite.

An external HD. It's been powered off for a few months. I keep videos for editing on it.

    An external HD.

Disconnect it and test. If there's no change, proceed as below.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.

Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you import the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:

    Using Setup Assistant

Transfer only Users, Settings, and Applications — not Other Files. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled. Reinstall your third-party system modifications from scratch, not including Soundflower.

Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

If you continue to get panics after taking these steps, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Thanks for your advice. I'll "test" for a while with the fireware cable disconnected and see what "happens".
