I get a notice to see iCloud choices in System Preferences, but Notes are ticked there (Mail isn't and won't!). Is this a Mountain Lion bug with Notes being a separate app. as when part of Mail in Lion, there was no problem!?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You should be able to find your iCloud Notes in Lion's Mail. To create a new note, just click the Note button on the Mails toolbar, or select File > New Note (Control-Command-N) from Mail's menu bar. This opens a New Note window. Show your Mail folders and you should see a Notes folder. If you don't, create a new one and your iCloud Notes should populate.

Sorry for the above, misread your question. Are you saying you can't check Mail in System Preferences/iCloud?
