Unfortunately, there aren't a number of products from which to choose, because nothing for the PC market can be substituted for the Apple OEM optical drive.  Unlike the rest of the slot-loading iMacs having FireWire, the Indigo model only has a slow USB 1.1 bus for an external burner.  You do have one expensive choice, which far exceeds the value of your iMac.  For $149, you can buy this internal DVD±RW drive designed for the slot-loading iMacs.  Given the age of your Indigo iMac and the problem that many of them have with PAV board failure, I wouldn't recommend investing that much money in it.

Alternatively, use an external DVD burner - if you can connect it. The one I use (cost less than $40) requires two USB2 sockets.

Hehe. Been there. As the owner of a number of older Macs, I find that keeping them in service isn't for the meak or the poor!

I was helping a friend consider upgrading an Beige G3 tower several years ago. During the planning/research, I discovered we could take his computer worth maybe $75 at the time, install about $300 worth of upgrades he wanted, and end up with a computer with a market value of $85

i know what you mean allan. i've guilty of bad math many a time. getting back to gabe i feel really bad for him. he wants to do all these upgrades on a computer that just won't accept them. if only he had a 500mhz indigo he could get  closer to what he really wants. and the computer he has is not useless, it just won't do the things he wants it to do. gabe for the **** of it why don't you connect that thing to the internet with ethernet, download classilla (web browser) in os 9, play around with it and see what you think. depending on which sites you go to it may be something you can live with.

Mods don't get a lot of play arond here for some reason but there are excellent sites devoted to them. Search 'mac mods" and you'll find some great resources that might help.

Here are some less expensive options for iMac optical drives:
