Hi, not sure on the .gz part, but as a rule PPDs are just text files, so I think it should work if 10.4.11 uses .gz files, can't test until tomorrow.

Thanks. 10.4 has gzipped files too but they surely uncompress to "text" as you said. Just wasn't sure whether the print systems were incompatibly different between the OSs. As it's unsupported it's hard to get an answer from HP. Suppose it could simply mean they chose not to test it with 10.4.

Yep, I think they don't test older ones.

Update FYI: Independent HP reps said the 10.5+ PPDs they provide are intrinsically incompatible with 10.4. So tested "Generic Postscript" with the inexpensive monochrome postscript LaserJet M401n printer mentioned above and it worked fine. Note the printer was added via Bonjour for 10.4, and (LPR/printer IP address) via the Desktop Printer Utility for Classic OSs (7.6.1 and 9.1 tested).
