Q: iMac 1TB Replacement Program

I just got an email from Apple stating my iMac qualifies for the iMac 1TB Seagate HD Relacement Program. Oh boy, aren't I lucky   I have Time Machine and a CCC bootable clone backup. Is it as simple as cloning back my System onto the new hard drive. The Apple email says I need to start from scratch with the Install DVD that came with the computer. What's the best proceedure.

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), IOS6, Apple TV2, Airport

Some Apple Stores do their own repairs. Whether or not they're using independent contractors after you drop it off is anyone's guess. IMO, having it done onsite is preferable to losing the machine for 2-7 days. It took two people 1 1/2 hours to replace my HD onsite. Bonus was I got to watch how it comes apart and where all the screws and wires go, how to clean the exhaust ports, and how to clean the display and glass cover. For a 27" iMac, best to have two people and the proper tools.

Well I just had my Seagate drive replaced at the local Apple store.  Replacement drive was another Seagate!!

    Old drive model = ST31000528ASQ revision AP24.

    New drive model = ST31000528AS revision AP2E.

Are others getting Seagate for the replacement???

    Thanks...............

I called AppleCare today about getiing my iMac HD replaced on site and just got an email confirmation that the part was ordered and a technician will be calling to set up an appointment. All this without AppleCare. Impressive.

I just hope the tech knows what he/she is doing as well as the repair that would have been done at the Apple Retail location. One could only assume Apple contracts with people that know what there doing.

Based on my one-time experience, they surely do know what they're doing. In my case, the tech had a newbie under training with him and walked him through the entire process. Newbie described what and how, with the tech adding corrections (when needed) and then just providing additional comments based on his experience to kill the silence. I couldn't have done it better and that's based on years building stereo equipment, o-scopes, and color TVs from kits and repairing many electronic items.

It doesn't matter where your Mac is repaired - unless you mail it to one of Apple's repair centers (there is one in TN), it is always an AASP they contract with; such repairs are generally not done within an Apple store (unless it's a reseller and he's also an AASP).

I'll be doing it that way myself, but will wait a while until they catch up - just have a clean and large surface ready for them to work on.

I have a huge table with a light above. It can be a workshop for a day. The email was from Apple National Service Provider.

NVida makes the chipset.  See how it is in the same location as the Intel chipset in system profiler?  See the letters AHCI?

    From wikipedia:

Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is a technical standard defined by Intel that specifies the operation of Serial ATA (SATA) host bus adapters

Maybe not.  Early in this thread Joe Gramm posted that his drive was made by Nvidia. You replied at one point:

"I see you posted your HD info and it does say Nvidia - that is strange, especially since your hard drive also starts with ST which is Seagate."

So maybe my comment should have gone to Joe Gramm, but I didn't see that you had explained to him that Nvidia made the chipset.  Since yours was the last in a series on that topic, I replies to you.
