Q: Windows print server authentication from Mountain Lion

The company where I work has set up a bunch of Xerox color printers through a Windows Print Server.  Since I work as a consultant over there, my MacBook Pro is NOT allowed to joint the domain although we can print and access other network resources.

I'm trying to figure out how to connect and log into the Windows Print Server from OS X 10.8, as we MUST authenticate before we can print.

The IT staff has provided us with the name of the print server which goes something like "\\theserver.something.com" and the name of the printer which goes like "WIP3ABCDEF".

1. How do I set up such a printer with Mountain Lion?

2. Do I need to first authenticate to the print server using "Connect to Server" and SMB, or do I need to use the "Advanced" section in "Print & Fax"?

Thanks.

As a follow up to my post, I was able to partially fix the problem although I still cannot print.

I was able to add the printer since it was visible through Bonjour, the "location" info matched the name of the printer.  However, printing a document yields nothing, the queue says "Looking for printer", then "Printing - The printer is in use" and then it hangs there indefinitely.

Looks like I need to authenticate to the Windows Print Server first, although I don't know how do do this.

I have been able to re-create the printer via the Advanced section using SMB and select the printer software.

Printing a document now asks me for an anthentication, however the process hangs after that, like it never finds the printer on the network.  My assumption is that my SMB line is incorrect.

    More later.

    Thanks.

The SMB path would be smb://theserver/WIP3ABCDEF

    If you wanted to add your Windows user details to the print queue, so that you don't get prompted to authenticate, then you could type;

    smb://username:password@theserver/WIP3ABCDEF

I found where the issue was, my first attempts was to use the initial strings:

    smb://username:password@theserver/WIP3ABCDEF

    smb://domain/theserver/WIP3ABCDEF

Those didn't work for reasons that escape me, but the following definition worked ok.

    smb://theserver/WIP3ABCDEF

This means that I must authenticate each time I print and I then specify the domain (domain\username). That's ok because whenever there's a password change I don't have to update the printer definition.

    Thanks!

I had the same problem at work. The following string worked for me:

    smb://username:password@server_ip_adress/WIP3ABCDEF

    Best regards,
