My rMBP will only work when plugged in to the mains. Battery shows 0% and a message says Condition: Replace Now when you click on the battery status.

I have reset SMC and PRAM, spoken to support but they cannot suggest anything further over the phone. I have an appointment at a Genius Bar on Tuesday, but wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and if so what the fault was? Was it hardware or software?

Sounds like it is either a defective battery (in which case they should replace your battery), or a defective power supply (in which case they will likely replace your rMBP if its not something they can easily repair).  I suspect it's a defective battery, though.

It would be advised that you make a backup before you head to the Apple Store, just in case.  Either way, since the battery is internal, it may require them sending it to a repair facility.

Stephen Porritt what happened after the appointment, could apple geniuses fix your problem. I'm having the same problem since last 1 week. I took my MBPrd to Apple service center here and they said may be it is a hardware problem and will take them about 3 weeks to fix, since I live outside USA and they dont have proper hardware availibility here. Please let me know what diagnosis you got, may be it will help me. Thnx

Thnx a lot Stephen, atleast now I know what the problem is. MBPr are all less than 6 months old  and so battery falls under warranty. I hope your one is now working fine.
