I had this problem off and on several times on my wifi only iPad 2 after upgrading to iOS 6. Do the following:

Settings >> Wi-Fi >> Tap the little blue dot with the ">" next to your network. >> Renew Lease

This fixed the sending and receiving problems immediately.

I upgraded to iOS 6 the day it was released and my iMessage was working fine.  Then just today I tried to send a picture and some text with it but I just got that sending bar to fill up half way.  I'm on an iPod Touch with only an 802.11g network and it's usually slow with sending pics.  I decided to let it wiat but it took way too long.  I shut down my iPod twice, turned on and off my wifi/airplane mode.  Nothing worked.  I then tried send two other "just text" messages to two people.  They have taken much time but finally sent after a couple minutes of waiting.  The part that scares me is I sent two messages from my Mac running the latest OS X Mountain Lion (updates and all) and I'm not sure if they ever sent.  But with the picture text I'm just going to wait it out and see what happens.  Reply if you have any suggestions or just to tell me I'm wrong.

I also just started having issue with my imessage from my iphone4 today. I went into settings and tried to turn imessage off and then back on and it will not activate. I tried renewing my lease on the network, it did not work. i also tried switching wifi off, and still would not activate. This problem seems to be with apples imessage servers, not necessarily the software.

Thanks for the info. This confirms my belief that the only thing anyone can do is WAIT for apple to fix it. The status page says that all services are online. Not that they are working but online. How many times has your printer been online but still won't print? Careful choice of words. Obviously no one at apple has updated to IOS6, they know better. And if they did they sure don't use iMessage or they would be singing a different iTune.

Unfortunately, I agree with you, Nomad. All we can do is wait to see if they DECIDE to fix it. I'm so sick and tired of Apple iCloud, Mail, Messages and numerous IOS problems I could scream. They've never gotten it right, and if the track record is any indication, they're not going to any time soon. I used to be an Apple evangelist; now I'm just migrating everything to Google. Come to think of it, maybe Apple should just focus on making the hardware and rely on Google to provide the software.

iMessage and photo stream will not work consistently over WIFI. You MUST be on a carriers network, then things work fine.

Crappy thing is using the carrier network takes data, which is how they're all making money these days.

I turned it all off. The people that are really hurting with this are the non-carrier able people. iPods, iPads on wi-fi only, etc.......

I'm sick of Apple. Just put Windows on my Macbook which I am selling to buy a new Windows computer. Too many problems since Lion and in the business world you almost have to run Windows to be compatible.

iPhone's have had issues since day one. If Apple would only come out and acknoledge the problems and let people know they're working the bugs out it would make these problems so much less of a big deal. But the fact they ignore people, say there is no problem, etc just makes it that much worse for the consumer. It's like a slap in the face.

Combine that with their bullying of companies like Adobe and now Google at the expense of the consumer and for me it's good bye.

Updated to 6.0.1 too. Still no luck with imessage and facetime. Does not matter about the strength of the signal, just able to log in.

When is Apple going to listen to what the people have to say?

    Much disappointement, much.
