I had the exact same problem here in Bremen, Germany. But thanks to Dick the hick I, too, got me a Powerline Adapter for about 30€ and it works great! I could at least just pick a film in the iTunes store it was instantly ready to go, no interruptions or anything.

    Hello Dick,

I had the same difficulty. I moved my ATV generation 1 about 2 feet away and above my other components (I purchase a wall mounted small stand) and the challenge was addressed quite effectively.

    Hope that helps.

    Niko

I live in Milan (Italy)... and I am suffering the same issues too!!!  Rented movies that used to load almost instantly now take hours.  I've tried a lot of configuration with router and apple tv, but nothing happened (except for some moment when the trailer of the movies started in a few seconds). This evening i'll try with the google solution (8.8.8 etc.). hope well!

It seems that in every case there is something we can't even think of that causes the problem.

For me, both the download from iTunes and streaming from my computer were painfully slow.

So, I started by restoring the AppleTV to factory settings. That fixed the iTunes download problem.

Next, I used Drive Genius 3 to defragment the Mac Mini's hard drive. That fixed the streaming issue from my computer.

    I'm a happy camper again.

I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Painfully slow (45 minutes plus) ATV 3 downloads whereas ATV1 & 2 were nearly instant.  ATV 3 in exactly the same spot as the previous 2 were.  Wifi speeds are 16 Mbps to 33 Mbps measured on my iPhone 4s right above the ATV 3.

Got a Western Digital Powerline Livewire WDBABY0000NBK-NESN Network Adapter and all is now good.

The ATV 3 is just way too susceptible to interference.  Prior models weren't.  This one is a fail.  I had to spend $100 extra on the WD Livewire to get it working right.

I have been a loyal Apple guy since the year 2000.  This device is a fail.  Better luck next time.

with Google Dns i was able to resolve the problem. Thank you, now the Apple tv goes like a train. I was able to watch 2 movies in the last 2 days, with very quick download.

Sorry to report that my AppleTV is useless, all of a sudden. I tried to watch something this morning and it only showed two icons: Computers and Settings (where did Movies, TV Shows, Music and all the other icons go?). Every now and then it would recognise the network but (after restarting it without achieving anything), when I try to restore it to factory settings, I get the message that the software is not available now.

It looks like folks are seeing two or more problems here.  Some are having actual Wifi interference and/or connectivity problems.  While others are just seeing slow downloads from the AppleTV iTunes service.

I am in the latter camp, my ATV has always been hard-wired with an ethernet cable and I am able to consistently stream content using the Netflix and YouTube apps on the ATV without issue.  It is only when renting a movie through the AppleTV iTunes app where I see the problem - will play for about 10-15 minutes then get stuck trying to cache content and never continue playing.

I ran the network test within ATV and and did not report any problems.

I also changed the DNS entry as was described by BenFinklea on Page 2 but this didn't improve the situation.

Apple needs to fix this ASAP or they will be losing millions in rental revenue.

The number of times that I have encountered this issue is getting beyond belief. Apple seems to have some capacity issues around peak viewing time. The current move that we are downloading will apparently be ready for viewing in around 221 hours. Really Apple!

Hi, I have the same problem. Extremely slow downloads from my 3rd gen ATV. My ISPs provides >7 Mb/s. I have the same problem as well with my IPad, so I'm sure it's due to slow apple server side speed! Btw I have the problem in our house in Dublin, Ireland as well as in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Have you tried running a network test on your apple TV?  Under Settings > Network (I think).

I ran it (just let it run) and afterwards everythign went back to normal (ie streaming was fast).

I read a post (thought it was on this thread but cannot find it now) that recommended running the "Network Test" on your apple TV.

I did this (I think it was under Settings > Network).  It took a few minutes to complete, but after it finished my streaming worked perfectly.  Beforehand films were unwatchable (estimated 200+ hours to download).

Hi, thanks for the remark. However I have I'm fact used this function several times. It did not come back with any error message. Also I have all signal strength bars in the "about" menu, no interference and I used the speedtest app on both iPad and iPhone to determine the network speed of my wifi. It's all fine.

I still think it's an apple server problem.

If you have slow download and long times (ex. 14 hours or more) try this solution (I've offered a lot of coffee).

    Quote:

Use Google’s Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems

    1. Navigate to Settings >> General >> Network and select Configure TCP/IP.

    2. Select “Manually” next to Configure IP.

    3. Dont change the IP address or the Subnet Mask and Router Address. Just click "Done".

    4. Set the DNS Address screen with the following: 008.008.008.008 and click “Done.”

You should now be able to stream more smoothly on your Apple TV.

If this works for you, please buy a cup of coffee for a complete stranger or some other selfless, random act of kindness.

If you have slow download and long times (ex. 14 hours or more) try this solution.
