That's an MPEG-4 file. You probably need to convert it to QuickTime before it will work properly in FCP.

Can you drag and drop the clip from the card into an event without going through the import window? Make sure your import prefs are set to copy to event.

Something's not right with the system. Try a new user and see if that does anything. You might also try reinstalled.

This is happening to me too. This is my 2nd time trying the FCPX trial (tried 10.0.5 a couple months ago). I deleted and reinstalled to try the newest update since it allows you to try it again for 30 days and I get the same exact issue as mentioned above. Try to hit play in the IMPORT window and it freezes and crashes. I tried it on AVCHD footage as well as previously transcoded ProRes 422 footage. Both with the same results. So I tried just importing all instead of playing. It took a few minutes and then it seemed to import but then froze and crashed again before I could do anything.

These same ProRes 422 files have been used in a previous FCP7 project with no issues. They've also been tested in Adobe Premiere CS6 with no issues. Why can't I seem to get FCPX to work on my system??!! So frustrating. Can't even really start a project let alone test it out.

I'm running FCPX 10.0.6 on the latest 2011 iMac with 16gb RAM and the upgraded AMD 6970M card.

    Please help!

Yes I'm having trouble importing too.

It imported successfull after three force quits and throw away preferences. Now when I click on even I get the dreaded turning beachball.

I'm in the process of reinstalling. If that don't work then I'll use Time Machine to bring back 10.05

I was able to just shift-select all the files and import and worked all last night on a project with no hiccups really. Although it took MUCH longer to import than if I was on FCP7 importing files. FCP7 takes a few seconds to load in say 100 clips whereas FCPX takes a few minutes. Is that normal?

BUT the issue still persists that the IMPORT window does not display any video at the top (see pic) and if I were to hit "play" on ANY of the clips it would beechball and I'd have to FORCE QUIT. This happens on all kinds of footage, ProRes Proxy, ProRes422, AVCHD and so on...is this normal? Is it the trial?

Any ideas? ...also notice that the list/icon selection buttons are not there as well on the bottom left. I've seen them appear and then almost immediately disappear. I can scrub through that little filmstip version of the clip but no video appears at the top and the play button = death.

    Any ideas?Screen shot 2012-10-27 at 12.12.35 PM.png

By the way I'm on the trial and this happens with all clips no matter where they are located (external drive w/ thunderbolt connection, on my desktop, wherever). As I mentioned before, my specs are listed in my last post (fully optimized 2011 iMac).

It depends on what import settings you're using. If you're copying to the events folder it can take quite a while. If you have it set to not copy, it will happen almost instantaneously.

The second is not normal. I've tried the import window with a number of different formats and have not seen the situation you see.

The list/filmstrip icons only appear when importing from a device or archive, not from the hard drive. You're doing a standard import similar to importing using navigation services. Only list view is available.

I do NOT have it set to Copy events to folder and its not set to be optimized or anything like that. I'm already importing ProRes Proxy and 422 material (I'm testing FCPX using files I've already worked on with FCP7). So it's not happening instantaneously like you mention. I did leave three import preferences checked though:

    "Import as keyword selections"

"Separate mono and group stereo audio"

    "Remove silent channels"

    Is this causing the delay?

And now for the REAL issue that crashes the program. Could it be the trial? Is it possible the full version does not have these issues? Not sure if the others who are experiencing this are on trial or full version. Do you have any ideas on how I could solve this?

    Good to know. Thx.
