My airport express perpetually has a flashing amber light and does not show up when I run AirPort Utility.  I ran the setup once and went through all the steps (it showed up initially), but then it switched to flashing amber and doesn't work.  I've hard shutdown the express, reset it to factory settings, hard shutdown the modem, etc., but nothing seems to work.  Ideas?

I just had similar problem yesterday with a new Airport Express base station.  Tech Support had me go into Airport Utility, Click on the base station icon, click "Edit", then under the Base Station tab at top of page, unclick the box "Allow Setup over WAN" -- it was checked and once I unchecked it, closed Airport Utility, etc.  the light went to solid green.   Hope that might help you.

I concur with Maui Man. The flashing amber can indicate that something was not configured yet or there was a potential security issue (like having the "Allow Setup over WAN" enabled.) This would allow someone from a remote location administer the base station.

    problem:

"My airport express ..does not show up when I run AirPort Utility"

    suggested solution:

"go into Airport Utility, Click on the base station icon"

    hmmm..

I think I'll keep looking for a solution..

    OK, I found a solution.

The problem is, I did two things at the same time and I'm mot sure which one got it showing up again.

I'm guessing it was resetting it that worked. There is a soft button on the bottom (of my model) beside the plugs, that you have to press using the tip of a ball point pen or something. When you hold this in for 10 seconds (whilst plugged in I think) it resets the thing back to factory defaults, and you can set it all up again.

If that doesn't work, the other thing I did was my own solution posted to another problem (itunes not connecting to the AirPort express under lion):

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2598887?start=45&tstart=0

I noticed that "wi-fi" no longer works, it is now called "AirPort", so I used replaced "Wi-Fi" with "AirPort" instead in the obvious place in my instructions on that page.

Whatever worked, it is showing up now. Hopefully I can get the whole shabang working now

I had an amber flashing light and Airport Utility was not connecting with my Airport Express, although it was visible in my network.

I clicked on the Airport Express icon and selected FORGET, it removed the Airport Express from the network.  I then clicked on Other Airport Stations and it automatically added it again for me.

Much easier than I was expecting, but the light is shining a very cheery green at me now.

    This worked for me:

I clicked on the icon in Airport Utility and from the drop down menu, I chose "Ignore". This started an update which took a few minutes to ptocess. Once that was done, it was green and working again.
