Which iMac G4 are you using?
If you're using either of these versions of the G4, PowerMac6,1, PowerMac6,3 (machines built between Sept. 2003 and July 2004) then you have USB 2.0 and FirwWire 400 ports.
If you're using any of these G4s, PowerMac4,2, PowerMac4,5 (machines built between January 2002 and Set. 2003), or the G4 1GHz 17" PowerMac6,1 built Feb. 2003 and Sept. 2003, the you have USB 1.0 and FirwWire 400 ports.
I've always had good luck with OWC products (macsales).
Here's a drive that is FireWire 400 compatible:
Here is a USB 2.0 choice:

Thanks for the reply. What about the 52X versus 48X cd-r's? Would it be better to buy the 48X? This seems to be the largest concern moreso than the brand. I was thinking of going with Verbatim.

Thanks. I was actually planning on using the internal drive on the imac. I have the Power mac 6.1 - 1.25 gHz. I really didn't want to buy a separate drive to do this. Any thoughts on what brand of CD-R would be best?

I disagree. The brand (the quality of the coating) is very important. Slow burn speeds are important. The official 'top speed' of the media is less important.
This applies particularly if you are using the internal superdrive rather than an external DVD burner.

WOOSH! (the sound heard as the original question flew over my head)
I don't know why I was thinking you had a question about drives (all the time I was writing my reply, I even kept thinking that I'd never heard of a Memorex branded drive, LOL)
I prefer Verbatim, but I'm not a heavy user.
Sorry about before.
