Q: iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

    Hello,

    Here are only the steps, send it to support@apple.com at least:

    So what I did, and what I suggest you do too:

    - send an email to the above recipients explaining the problem, that you bought an iPhone for the full price of 649$ + taxes (for the 16GB model), and that you specifically asked for it to be used in another country with another carrier;

    - write that after you got in your home country you have the SMS problem;

    - thus no iMessange and no FaceTime (I think this is the catch, as these are their most mediate features);

    - provide them all the details about the phone: Model, Serial Number, IMEI, MEID, your phone number (at which you can be contacted);

    - tell them that the email address with which the iPhone is associated in iTunes;

    - try to send the email from the email address with which the iPhone is associated;

    - if you can attach also a photo of the receipt, that would be great (I did that), the receipt has the Model and the

    Serial number of the phone, so you are very credibile in this;

    - if you can provide also the name of the store where it was bought (it's written on the receipt).

    After the mail with the above details I got contacted the second day and the third day the problem was solved

    This is awesome. Keep it going guys! Good thing we didn't stopped due to some negative comments from guys with points. Just repeating roman.dor post to help spread the steps to solution:

    So after all it's a lock/unlock problem!

    Wish you all to solve your SMS problem too!"

    As I always told, the problem is on the Sprint firmware/iOS version for this phone, that's what I believe!

    I was checking another iPhone, not the Sprint phone, and the difference I found and I believe this is the problem...

    If you check under Settings -> Messages, probably what you will see on you Sprint iPhone is the following:

    "iMessage (ON/OFF)

    Use your Apple ID for iMessage

    SMS/MMS

    MMS Messaging (ON/OFF)

    Show Subject Field (ON/OFF)

    Character Count (ON/OFF)"

    That's it!

    But, if you go to other iPhones, it have one more option which is :

    SEND AS SMS (ON/OFF)

    If you check for example an iPhone 4S, it will have this option, and on iPhone 5 it didn't have.

    I'm not sure, but I think that since this option is missing on the iPhone 5 Sprint, we can not send SMS...

    Hi Omer

    Yes, my iPhone was SPRINT, OS at the time when bought was 6.0. Now, it's still 6.0.

    I think Apple locked these feature .

    thank you apple.hn for your replay

    Here is a print screen of my phone, the sim card that is inside is the blank sprint nano sim thats located inside the phone when i got it sealed at the apple store after paying full retail price for it.

    when im inserting my local sim card (cellcom network) i get 5 bars and able to make a call but not to send text, imessage or facetime.

    anyone also got this pop up ?

    thx.

    Hi omer78,

    I had the same problem as you, but it did show iPhone successfully activated with local SIM, but still I wasn't able to send SMS messages.

    After being contacted by Apple and restoring my iPhone from iTunes, I got the message "Congratulations - your iPhone is now unlocked" and the problem was solved.

    So it's a problem with locking of iPhone. Unfortunatelly right now it seems to be that you need to put pressure on them and solve the problem for yourself, they didn't get a solution for all of us

    Let me know if I can help with any other information, hopefully you'll solve your problem!

    Hi roman.dor,

    Can you please go to Settings -> Messages on your iPhone that is working now and let me know if there is an options as following:

    "SEND AS SMS (ON/OFF)"

    Or if your iPhone only have the following options:

    "iMessage (ON/OFF)

    Use your Apple ID for iMessage

    SMS/MMS

    MMS Messaging (ON/OFF)

    Show Subject Field (ON/OFF)

    Character Count (ON/OFF)"

    Thanks.

    Hi Max,

    Yes, I understand it's an unlock problem. But, after your iPhone was unlocked, what exctly options are showing on Settings -> Messages ?

    Because as I note, mine is "locked", but it's missing the option "Send as SMS".

    Thanks.

    Hi Fabio,

    Yes it's a lock/unlock problem from iPhone, not from settings.

    Please check my post here, there is explained how I and many others solved the problem.
