I have a Sony DCR-TRV27 mini dv camcorder that uses an IEEE1394 (iLink), is it possible to connect it to my MacBook Pro to view and edit home movies with iMovie11?  My computer is running mountain lion, has a thunderbolt connection, a firewire 800 and usb connections.  The camcorder is not on the list of compatible video cameras but I noticed there are a handful of commuity members that use it with success.  I am not sure what I need to make it work.   Thanks!

It should work. Have a SONY TRV-900E and a SONY PC-330E and they both work - BUT ONLY VIA FireWire !

You need a 4-pin to 9-pin (FW-800) Cable - Nothing else will do.

And if Quality is of interest then

    • iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - ARE NOT tools of choise

    • iMovie HD6 and any version of FinalCut will work Greatly !

Your Camera delivers interlaced SD-Video and only the last programs can handle this to 100% - iM'08 to 11 discard every second line resulting in a quality loss - slight to someones and severe to me and others. Tast may differ.

Thanks so much for the information.  I am a complete beginner at this, are iMovie HD6 and FinalCut easy to use?  Any other suggestions for a novice, so I don't completely ruin family videos?
