Solved it! The move to new iTunes and new IOS clearly has a few settling issues.
1. Sign-out of iTunes Store
2. Disconnect iPhone and switch off 'sync over wifi'
3. Close iTunes
4. Shutdown and cold re-start computer
5. Start iTunes
6. Dock iPhone and allow sync to take as long as needed (10 mins+ for me)
7. Force new sync and watch steps flow through
8. Sign-in to iTunes Store
9. Turn on iTunes Match
Complete ... fully working iTunes and IOS!

Thanks for the tips!
I had tried a few things on the phone, then saw your posts, and realized I hadn't done a reboot/shutdown of my computer yet since running into this issue with iOS6 and/or iTunes 10.7.
All I had to do was reboot the computer and everything on the phone was recognized properly again, and no error 1156 any more =)

I have iphone 3GS, so I was really hoping for this to work, but it doesn't resolve anything,
At step 6. sync doesn't initiate.
Procede to step 7. get an error message 1156.
I really regret upgrading to iOS6.0

I was having this problem and getting the same error code. All I had to do was sign in to my itunes account. I didn't know that somehow I had been logged out probably due to a recent OS update.

Solved here too. The simplified steps I took:
-Signed out of iTunes Store (in iTunes on Mac)
-Turned off WiFi syncing (again in iTunes on Mac)
-Disconnected iPad from Mac
-Reconnected iPad to Mac
-Sync worked perfectly.

Simplified steps worked here too! Was one step away from factory reset, so thanks for the tip!

I have been having the same issue. Win7 and iPhone4
The phone had the same sync issues as noted in this thread across both my desktop and laptop machines (both Win7 but different versions - Home and Ultimate)
I fixed it by syncing the phone to cloud (which meant my contacts etc. were copied to my iPad just in case they were lost)
Factory reset the phone
Resync from cloud.
The only loss of data were a couple of apps (which I restored very quickly)
It has been fine ever since.
