iCloud mail on an iOS device requires iOS 5.0 or later, which is not possible on an original iPhone.

In the Apple Knowledge Base article to which you link; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864, there is another link; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5330, regarding iOS devices running iOS 4. That leads me to believe that iOS devices running iOS 4 can be hand figured to use iCloud mail services, but not your iPhone running iOS 3.Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iPad 2, iPhone 5 (iOS 6)

You are completely wrong. Dah•veed may be right, but you are not. iCloud does require iOS5; IMAP mail per se does not, as even the most superficial look through these very community pages shows. Far from being helpful, seemingly authoritative but factually incorrect emails help no one.

Here is an Apple support document about iCloud email, see if that helps http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2621

Solution: delete the existing account(s). Follow the iOS 4 instructions completely (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5330). These are different from the "regular" IMAP settings. Working for me.
Sorry I already clicked "helped" as this is solved.

Me? No, It's you who has no idea what they are talking about. Quoted directly from this document:
Set up iCloud Mail on and iOS device
Your device must have iOS 5 or later installed.
Next time, I'll be sure to avoid any post you make requesting help. I'm glad it's working for you now, & I truly hope the next update stops it.

Do you really hope that? That is pathetic. Get a life, you absurd forum troll. The fix works because I followed Apple's own instructions. But yes, please don't answer any other questions I may ask. Thank you.
