iMovie automatically imports all my iphoto video into the event browser but I want to then categorize them by events. After creating an event if I drag a clip to it, I'm warned that it will "copy" the clip to the event in its entirety. I have many many videos and can't afford the space to actually "copy" video. Is that what it is really doing?  I think of events like a tag useful to filter out all but what I want to work on right now. How can I do that without "copying".

Importing video clips directly to Events in iMovie, rather than to iPhoto, will make life a little easier for you in the future. Unless, of course, you have a need to have them in iPhoto as well as iMovie.

I believe the answer to your question is, yes, iMovie will make a copy if you drag the iPhoto clips to an Event. The clip thumbnails in the Event called "iPhoto Videos" are simply pointing to the actual clips in your iPhoto Library, as you would be aware. At least they appear in chronological order within iPhoto Videos in iMovie's Events library. I don't know of a way to reorganise them without creating separate Events.

I don't have iMovie open at the moment, and am a little sidetracked with other things just now, but when I get a chance I'll try testing some things for you. It's possible that the Keyword function in iMovie can be used with the iPhoto Videos, enabling searching on keywords (tags).

I've now done some testing and the Keyword function in iMovie can be used with video clips in the iPhoto Videos Event. You may find this feature useful in sorting your iPhoto clips in iMovie. Here is some information for you that will illustrate the process involved (note that the video refers to iMovie '08 but the same principles apply in iMove '11):
