There are different ways to add the numbers depending on how you plan to use them. If you want the numbers to stay with the row position (first contact always has the number "1") then you can use the formula: =ROW()-1
The "-1" accounts for the header row.
If you want the numbers to stay with a particular contact even if the rows are sorted or otherwise disturbed, use the Fill tool. Enter a 1 for the first contact and a 2 for the second contact. Select both and then grab the little circle in the lower right corner and drag it down.
