I was washing my iPod nano with a wet tissue, when I noticed water had soaked through the screen. The click wheel functioned perfectly, but the screen no longer lit up. I charged the iPod, and the screen lit up but went blank. I followed instructions I'd seen on the internet and put the iPod in a bag of rice, but I checked it today and tried turning it on. The Apple sign appeared, but disappeared in a few seconds, so I put it back in the rice. The iPod makes clicking noises every few minutes, and I'm not sure what I should do. If it's beyond saving, are there other companies besides Apple that will charge less for a repair?

It's likely the contact with moisture short circuited something with the iPod's internals.  As to what, there is no way to tell for sure. You'll want to send/take your iPod in for repair replacement.
