Q: Mac Mini (2012) and Dell U2713HM monitor: which cable for full resolution?

Hello all,

I'm going to buy a Mac Mini (2012) and a Dell UltraSharp U2713HM monitor. However I'm confused: which cable do I need to get full 2560x1440 resolution? Is there any extra adapter that I must buy?

Thanks for any help!

Sense the HDMI output port may only support resolutions up to 1920-by-1200 like the earlier Mac Mini models. Your best bet is to use the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and a DVI-D cable which supports resolution up to 2560-by-1600, instead of the analog (VGA) adapter and cable connection.

Your best option is a Mini Displayport to (large) Displayport cable. If you were to use a Mini Displayport to DVI adaptor you would need to get the much more expensive Dual Link DVI Adaptor whereas a Mini Displayport to Displayport is a simple and relatively cheap cable.

Good work John, I missed the DisplayPort input when I first looked at the monitor spec's.

Do you have any issues with the Mac mini and the display?

I just ordered a U2713HM for my 2011 Mac mini, but cancelled it shortly after because I read on forums people were having problems with both it not waking after sleep, displaying YcBcR instead of RGB colors, etc.

I intended to use the mini displayport to displayport cable with the mini, as the DVI port on the monitor is reserved for a Windows 7 PC, but may have to look at another monitor if this one has issues with the min.

Any update on how U2713 is working out with Mac mini? Was planning on buying one but am hesitating.

Elallana: I bought it and it has given me absolutely no problems whatsoever (I've used it daily for almost a full week now) with the Mini.

Just be sure that you purchase a mini displayport to displayport cable to go with it (they are much cheaper than Apple's adapters anyway).

    Hi John

I am planning to buy a U2713HM for my MacBook Air 13 in (mid 2012). Cable Matters who sell on amazon.co.uk what seems a v. good MiniDP to DP adapter say that their cable will not support the resolution of the U2713HM. Will a MiniDP to Dual-Link DVI, which does support the resolution, also support audio?

    Thank you.

Hi there, i have a new mac mini (dec 2012) and bought the Dell U2713HM. i have used the dual link DVI cable that came from Dell and connected it to the HDMI port of my Mac mini. It shows 1928 x 1080 as the maximum resolution. was thinking maybe i needed specific drivers - but the Dell site shows drivers only for all Windows OS versions and none for MAC. Think i should get the Mini Displayport to (large) Displayport cable option as mentioned in this thread and try? Or am i missing something? Appreciate the help!

Hdmi will only support 1928 x 1080. If you want to use the full resolution of your monitor, you'll need the Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or Mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI.

bought a 2013 mac mini and hooked it to the Dell 2713 HDMI to DVI, and was disappointed with the resolution. Than as suggested above got the mini displayport to displayport cable - and indeed got the higher, beautiful resolution. No issues (just had to change the the input source using the Monitor's menu).

    thanks all

I have that cable and the Dell u2711.  It worked just fine until I upgraded to Mavericks.  It will no longer work at the higher resolution.  So don't upgrade until Apple gets the problem fixed.

    Hi all,

I want to buy a Dell Ultrasharp u2713HM

to onnect on my iMac (late 2012)

    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Videocard NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

    OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Is this possible (and/or a good idea)?

What cable should I buy to get the full resolution?

    Best regards,

    Bart
