I have an iPod Nano 3rd generation.  I hook it up to my computer (with Windows 7) and when I open iTunes, it does not show as a device but I get the following message:  "The software for this iPod is not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes to install the required softward."  There is no other message, such as error 7.  I hooked the iPod to my son's computer and it shows up as a device in his iTunes with no error message.  I have followed the instructions for uninstalling iTunes and accompanying programs per this  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 .  FIVE times!!!!  I keep getting the same #***$% message.  I don't know what else to do.  Help!!!!  Please.

Set the startup type to Automatic and yes, kill that previous iPodServices.exe*32 process and then reconnect your iPod. Anyluck there?

Did you remove and re-install iTunes and all Apple related software using the exact instructions in this Apple support document? If not, I would do it again following the instructions in the order given.

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

    Should I delete them too?

Yes. Everything iTunes related should be removed from your PC.

Your iPod will only sync with one iTunes library at a time. If you try syncing it with a different PC, everything will be erased and replace with what is configured to sync to the iPod from your new iTunes library.

Otherwise, if your work PC is now the iPod's syncing computer, you must double check it is configured to sync podcasts from under the iPod's Podcasts configuration pane in iTunes.

Should deleting those items not listed in the uninstall instructions be done after following those instructions, or does it not make any difference?

    Doesn't make any difference.

suspect there are iPod and iTunes items scattered in all sorts of hidden places on my 4 year old Compaq 64 bit PC.

    Could very well be.

There may also be an issue with the iPod's driver or your system trying to install the correct driver.  We'll have to look in Device Manager to see if it appears anywhere.

Songs need to be in iTunes before you can sync/add them to your iPod Nano.  So import these rphasody tracks in iTunes first and then drag them from their location in your main iTunes Music library onto your iPod under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes.

I'm a little low on ideas, but I can point you to the iTunes forums. There are some knowledgeable people who may be able to get this iTunes issued resolved.
