Email working on iPad not iPhone

I've got a particular email account that works perfectly in the mail app on my iPad.  When I try to replicate it on my iPhone it just won't work.  A message usually appears saying I've provided an incorrect password, but I haven't.  And all settings are an exact replica of the settings that work fine on iPad.  Any ideas ??

iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, iOS 5.1
