Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

That's exactly what they said when the iMac below came out.

You can check back with me 5 or 10 years from now.  But currently, I will purchase no computer without a built-in optical drive.

I agree.........however, when you think about it, those laptop thin, vertically installed drives where any media can easily shift by 1/1000th of an inch, were never the best. Even though I use my external to burn and only use the Superdrive sparingly (when I need to copy something or for an OS/software install), I've had three out of four fail. There were all replaced free of charge under Applecare, but that's not the point.

I'm happy that they finally place the SD slot on the back!!! It's about time they did this... This means I won't be placing the SD card in the CD/DVD slot anymore by mistake... Wait a sec... I need to rethink this again. Back in a few hours.

    More food for thought:

I've never used the SD slot - I use a USB card reader and plug it into a nice, easily reachable USB hub.......

Humbug! Belongs on the front where it doesn't have to compete with all those other input device's cables. DUMB and totally disfunctionial.

I do believe almost everything has been already said but to add more rage, madness, tears and even a sarcastic smile there is this sweet link.

What is almost impossible to detect what are the options to us visual artists?

Unless the big next step is MAGIC Apple is forgetting a huge segment of their customers that buy their products not only for their awesome design but for their productivity.

Honestly, and since this amputation is some kind of "new news" for me my options are:

Not buy it (the thinner iPhone inspired iMac)

    An external drive

    or….(?)

Well, there's the Mac Pro or, at the other end (and getting better now being offered with a fusion drive): a Mini with an external monitor or two and an external drive.

Defeats the idea of an all in one computer that doesn't take up much space now doesn't it.   Apple screwed the pooch on this one.

I have a MacBook Pro retina and purchased an external BLURAY BURNER, and by doing so killed 2 birds with one stone by solving the problems of bluray and no DVD drive.

I think Computers are dead as we know them, Apple's big money is iPhones/iPads/iPods, & we're forced to adapt to those crazy people that come into my store & want me to stand there for a half hour or more while flick, pinch, sqeeze, trying to find a pic of the fish they have no idea what it is & didn't buy from me, but has problems.

Dumber still but rarely getting any mention is putting the headphone jack on the back. It makes sense to put it there only if you assume everyone will always use headphones (or an auxiliary sound system) with an iMac. I could be wrong but I don't think that's true for very many users.

If the jack must go on the back for some reason, at least there should be an easy to use, built-in option to switch between the built-in speakers & headphones that can remain plugged in without killing the speakers, ideally with separately adjustable volume levels for each.

Only at the edges. Look again, it's about the same thickness in the middle as before.

OK, but how would you insert a DVD into a drive located in the middle of the case???
