You're gonna love this.  So, there's a '30-day return policy' with our phone carrier. (We have a corporate account)  Apple shipped the phone on 9/14.  We received it on 9/21.  Since receipt, I had been measuring and documenting performance compared to my iPhone 4 to prove there is a huge issue with battery life and clearly there is.

On 10/15, we let our carrier know we were having a huge issue and that we wanted to return the phone.  We were told that they count the from the SHIP date in it's '30-day return policy'.  Doesn't matter if it takes one week or two to get to you.  By the time you figure out and prove you have a real problem, sorry, time's up!

Apple has done a good job of ensuring the people who purchase their phones for a premium can't upgrade the memory, or change out the battery nor do they admit they have a problem.    Their unacceptable answers to date have been - turn everything off and turn the screen down so you'd need to be a marsupial to actually see it, but other than that, it should last you a day if you don't use it much!  In addition, I only have the one charger cord that they sent with the phone.  The others have been on back order until November 7!

We returned the phone to Apple for repair.  They received it yesterday.  Today we got an e-mail stating they've 'repaired' it and are sending it back to us.  We should have it in 2 business days.

In the meantime, we checked the service ticket opened with Apple.  Under the 'service' section, it states they couldn't duplicate the isuse.  Seriously?  They have it for less than a day.  In order to see how the battery life depletes, one would have to observe AND MEASURE it over a couple of days, wouldn't one?  Since they couldn't 'recreate' the problem, they're basically shipping back the same poor-performing phone we sent them.

I will NEVER buy another iPhone again.

    Hello Hikerlass,

most likely, your IP-5 HW is *NOT* the reason for this issue.

Me and some other people expect, that a SW-patch will solve it.

Have a look on my post some days ago here in this thread.

I made several tests (time measurements) and my conclusion was: When using the 3G data connection, especially when WLAN is running in parallel, the transmitting unit seems to have unusual (high) demands. If you, for expample, only use WLAN connection (mobile data off), the HW surpasses the given specifications.

I´m sure, that the Apple-People well recognized this (relatively long) thread here and I´m confident, that they will solve the problem as soon as possible.

Edit: In addition, an high amount of IP-4 and 4s users also suffering on battery drain from their devices, since updating to IOS 6.

Sometimes, an error occors. Although this is Apple, they are only humans there, no aliens :-).

I hope some of those various carriers include Canadian carries who sell the iphone 5's.

The problem seems to be related to cellular data for me.  If I use WiFi only my battery life ranges from average to outstanding.  With 3G the phone never makes it to 7 hours no matter what.

I've purchased every iPhone to date starting since the 3g for the past several years and each year I hoped the battery life on their mobile products would improve. Each new phone failed to keep up to my expectations, but was somewhat decent and somewhat comparable to what apple claims their product battery life specifications are. I'm an apple fan boy and always will be, but this iPhone has the utmost horrible battery life I've seen in all my years of using apple phones. I can watch my percent drop almost every minute that I type. It's scary. Charging doesn't even work sometimes. I have AppleCare and thankfully they replaced my iPhone after sleep/wake button at the top stopped working for no apparent reason (with no physical damage and even after a software restore).

I've true everything to fix the battery life. My brightness is beyond low, location services/wifi/Bluetooth are all off. All apps are up to date. I always keep the multitasking tray to a minimum in terms of minimizing background activity. Nothing has worked. Even after playing a couple games on my phone the battery life goes from a full charge to lower than 35%. To make matters worse, I know 7 people with the new iphone and each one I've asked says their battery life is completely unimpressive. Come on apple.....

WTH? That is incredible! Were you only surfing the web or did you play some games as well?

Did you forget to read "WiFi only no cellular"?

Turn off your cellular when on WiFi and you'll se the change yourself.

Im pretty sure he meant no cellular data. Switching it to airplane mode is draining peoples battery as well. The screenshot also shows that he is connected to a network .

Of course. I'm getting blind. Cellular data is one of the culprits when talking about battery drain on the iPhone 5. It makes a HUGE difference turning it off when connected to WiFi.

In the never ending bad battery saga I've noticed that my phone stopped auto locking itself regardless of WiFi or cellular connection.  What ****.

The iOS 6.0.1 update is now available.  Hoping it fixes some of our issues.  For me disabling LTE allowed me to get about 8 hours out of my phone under normal use.  I'm going to re-enable LTE now that I've installed the update and I will report back in a few days and see how things go. Good luck!

Well, I've done the update, yes we shall see how it goes. One thing I noticed immediately following the update was that I was getting four to five bars again with my carrier EVEN with LTE! That's weird because I was only getting two with LTE before and three just with 3g on. Wifi is a little less though..it hasn't affected anything. As a test I watched about twenty minutes of video on Netflix. Battery went down about 4 percent..don't know how good or bad that is...not awful.

It's too early to tell if anything else improves but, I hope it certainly does. I've left LTE off though and won't turn back on unless I want or need the speed of it for something. The top priority is getting a good long battery life.

Not only is 6.0.1 out for consumers but 6.1 beta is available now for developers...

I'm still getting horrible battery life after the 6.0.1 update with normal web browsing.  I had my phone in my pocket lastnight and the battery drained from 82% to 69% in just 2 hours.  My coworker has zero problems with battery drainage, something's gotta give.
