What model is your Sony? You can check here to see if it is supported.
Whether or not it is supported, there is a free app that can convert it to something editable.
Get MPEG Streamclip here. I suggest the Beta version. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
There is a chance you may need to install an Apple quicktime component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if this is the case.
Drag your MPG file into MPEG Streamclip. Then FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the video codec. Choose Uncompressed for the Audio codec. Save this file and you can import into iMovie via FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.

Thanks, but I couldn't get it to work. I finally imported directly from the camcorder, Sony hdr cx7 and that imported it into I Movie.
