Q: DELETING unwanted TV shows on Apple TV 2nd Generation

I have deleted the TV shows from within itunes by:

deleting the TV shows from purchased shows
deleting files to the recycling bin & emptying it

deleting files from the media folders

Home sharing is turned on...

Why are the deleted shows still displaying on my apple TV???

This is something I have been trying to figure out for months!

Looking forward to a real answer on this one...

Thanks!

Deleting from purchased shows:  This is only a smart playlist.  This is not the correct method to delete a file.

Deleting files to the recycling bin:  Are you doing this manually?  You shouldn't.  This will remove the files but leave the iTunes reference to the files, ie you will keep seeing a broken reference in iTunes.

The correct way to remove/delete a file from iTunes is to go the the media by navigating your iTunes library (not a playlist).  There, you delete the file and iTunes will ask you if you also want to place the file in your trash or keep it in your media folder.  Select to trash it (the other choice would leave a file without iTunes referencing it).

The change will be reflected to your AppleTV.  Your AppleTV use the iTunes library reference to know your media content and not the actual presence of the files within your media folder.

Thanks for your reply...the problem is that I have deleted the files I want gone from every single place including the way you are suggesting but the files still appear on my apple TV. It is very frustrating as I have over 600 TV shows and some I have no interest in ever watching...Maybe my pc itunes account is not in synch with the Apple TV...Still lost on this one but thanks for trying!

Your deletion method was the first thing to verifty.

Your AppleTV can't "have" the file if there are deleted from your PC since the AppleTV 2nd generation only stream your content.  I do agree that your issue is somehow related to the syncing of your iTunes library to your AppleTV.

I would suggest to first, close your iTunes and then restart your AppleTV (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3180).  Reopen your iTunes and check if the sync issue is resolved.

If not, I would suggest you restore your AppleTV (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4367).

Yes, it's very annoying - I haven't found anything to work yet.  Have you atvinfo?

No - I have almost given up...I love apple TV but this issue is ridiculous as it should be easy to delete a TV show. I have bought some shows which were the dumbest shows ever without knowing it & now cannot get rid of them...I have tried everything including deleting from all areas of my PC & iTunes account as well as restoring the apple TV...

    Hi atvinfo,

Have you tried my last suggestion?  What are the outcomes?

It seems to be related to a syncing issue between the AppleTV and your iTunes library.  First trial would be to restore your AppleTV.  Given the low number of settings on the device, it should not be too time consuming to try it.

I haven't got into this specific issue but sometimes I had to close iTunes in order the force the sync to see recently added content on the TV.  However, I would suggest that seems it doesn't appear to be a widely spread issue there may have something specific to you that can be solved.

Hi & thanks for trying to help with this & yes I tried a full restore of the apple TV & it did not work...I do however have a folder named Previous iTunes library with 2 .itl files...At this point I am grasping at straws. Maybe there are still files on my pc somewhere else that I am not aware of. I deleted from:

    iTunes account

    iTunes Library under TV Shows

    C Drive & Recycling

So maybe it is a sync issue...does anyone know how to troubleshoot sync settings?

Are you seeing the shows under "Computer" or under "TV Shows" on ATV?  The content from iTunes is displayed under "Computer".  So if it is removed from iTunes it will not show up there.  The listings under "TV Shows" are from iCloud.  It does not matter what you have locally on your computer.  All the content you have ever purchased from ATV will always show up there.

If the is an older gray ATV they sync the content locally.  So deleting off the computer will not delete it from ATV.

Can you play these shows that are still showing up?

Thank you!!! That makes sense! I just checked & if I go to Computer, every show I deleted does not appear in the apple TV library list.

I have the second generation Apple TV...

I can still play deleted TV shows on apple TV when I am watching my purchased content (because they are iCloud)

So then how does one delete a TV show from iCloud?

you don't.  just do not download it again.  TV shows are from Apple.  You have control over the computer section only.

do you mean under the TV show section of your AppleTV?  it's the store showing Apple content, so no, they will obviously not remove content.
