I really don't want to reinstall itunes as this will mean I have to start all over again with my music doesn't it?
No, a reinstall shouldn't touch your content. (That being said, it's always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times in case of disasters of any sort.)

I restarted my pc once again and after a little while an itunes update box appeared asking whether I wanted to download the update. Felt I had nothing to lose so accepted the update and it reloaded/installed successfully with all my songs and playlists still intact!
So a couple of fret-ful hours but turned out ok in the end.

Same thing just happened to me but despite several restarts, there is no indication what has happened and no update box has appeared. Does anyone know what has caused this?

Further on. I uninstalled anything to do with itunes and reinstalled. After several failed attempts (with various messages and reason popping in boxes eveywhere) it has successfully installed again with no apparent problems.
