when we sent mom's in, there was no option to chose any particular model or any option to pay more. In fact at that time, we didn't even know what the replacement would be at all.

No, there is no ability to specify color or to pay more for a higher capacity unit. Everyone gets the 8Gb silver one.

My repair staus shows "Step 1: Service requested" as of Nov 28, 2011. I mailed my iPod to them (in their envelope) on Dec 29, 2011. The UPS site shows that the package was delivered on Jan 4, 2012. Since then there has been nothing: no change in status, no confirmation of receipt, and needless to say, no replacement.

I placed a service request back in November when Apple emailed me, but I have yet to receive the return envelope from them. My repair status says: "November 17, 2011: Service requested."
I guess it's not going to go anywhere, which is disapointing, but I applaud apple for trying. I tried contacting support, but I was going to have to pay to speak to a representative?

No, you do NOT have to pay them to speak to a Customer Support rep about this issue! I talked to them twice after I sent my first one in. Just continue the call until you get to a person.

Do NOT continue to just wait silently. Call Apple because there is clearly a problem.

I called them, it was my fault. The repair was cancelled due to the PO Box in my address.
Should be all good now.

We recently sent in 2 - within a week of each other. Each of them took about a week total - from when I registered it, recd the envelope, sent in next day and within 4-5 days we had the replacement ipod. Much faster now than when we sent one in last November.
However, reminder - the warranty on the new one is 90 days. One of our replacements would only hold a charge for about 6 hours. Not being familiar with this model, I just figured it was a smaller/weaker player. Well, it decided to "die" on day 91 it wouldn't recognize in itunes or limited charge. I called them, they emailed me things to try - reset, etc. Tried suggestions for 2 days, then called them again. Since it was past the 90 days, they nicely explained to me, sorry, it was out of warranty. I heated up a bit and didn't give up. They actually went back to the FedEx records to find the date that I signed for the receipt of replacement and then said they'd honor it, but impressed upon me that it was an exception only with supervisor approval.
So, pay attention to your new unit to make sure it's functioning properly. Remember, it's a refurb so may have had a different issue originally.

I only found out about the Replacement Program yesterday, Friday 20th April. I actually called Apple to enquire about how to get a new click wheel for my 1st Gen iPod as it would no longer work. It was whilst talking to the customer advisor that he told me about the Replacement Program.
The customer advisor said that I qualify for it and that a pre-paid envelope for the return would take about 1 week to 10 days to arrive, well to my surprise, it arrived this morning. I went to the Post Office and even though the envelope was pre-paid, I asked the postmaster for recorded delivery on the item as well as proof of posting.
Now, I just have to sit and wait and see what happens and how long it will take for the replacement to arrive, though I was told it would be around 6 weeks...and that's fine with me. I was almost of the verge of sending the iPod to iPod heaven yesterday, so glad that I didn't.

After months of hearing nothing at all, I sent them an email asking them to look into what was happening. I got an immediate reply, a status update a few days later, and received my new 8GB iPod not long after.

Would you please let me know if the replacements are still the iPod nano sixth gens (the small square shaped ones that people convert to watches) or the newest gen that just came out last month. Thanks!
