Are there system-wide settings for spelling and grammar in OS 10.8?

I know I can set preferences in Text Edit and other apps, but what if I

want Mail to stop suggesting that I capitalize the first letter of a sentence

in my mails and still want Mail to check my spelling.

Are there commands for the terminal that can change that specific behaviour?

Thanks for reading me.

Best regards.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2,7 GHz i7, 8 Gb RAM, AMD HD 6630M

System Preferences > Language & Text > Text tab

In Mail, Edit menu > Spelling and Grammar.

There is no pref for capitalizing the first letter of a sentence.

That's really odd. Mail does not do that for me and I would find it incredibly annoying if it did. I've been searching Mail for a solution and have not found one yet, but I'll let you know if I do.

Edit: You didn't install a third party system modification called TextExpander, did you? That would explain it.
