I have noticed that for some strange reason I have duplicate, triplicate and even 4 & 5 of the same contacts in my iPhone4S.

First, how do I stop getting these duplicates?  Does it have anything to do with syncing?  I have no clue but would take me hours and hours to go through each contact and start deleting the repeats.

Second, how do I get rid of the duplicate, etc. without going through them one by one?  I have in excess of 700 legit contacts, which include contact name, telephone number, cell number and email.  I only need one.

Thanks for the usual help and I know I will get an answer ASAP.

Exactly, how are you syncing contacts? Duplicates, as you describe, are usually the result of syncing directly will a supported contact application on your computer & over-the-air with something like iCloud. Doing this will create duplicates, & a mess. To fix, describe how you sync contacts now...doing so with iCloud or similar?

Are you syncing contacts with a supported contact application on your computer? On the Info pane, in iTunes, with your phone connected, what do you have checked?

Are you syncing contacts with iCloud? On your phone: Settings>iCloud...are Contacts on?

Are you syncing contacts with FaceBook? Settings>Facebook...signed in? Contacts on?

I'm not looking at your phone & thus have no idea what you're doing or not doing.

Decide what you want to sync contacts with, either Outlook or AOL. Since you're syncing contacts with AOL over-the-air, if you turn that off you should get a prompt to keep on your phone or to delete. Select delete. If you want to sync with AOL, on the info pane in iTunes deselect syncing contacts & syncing with Outlook. You do one or the other, not both at the same time.
