Q: Horrible colors on external monitor using macbook air(2012) with mini dp to hdmi

I have one of the new macbook airs (2012) hooked up to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a mini display port to hdmi adapter.

The dsiplay shows up fine on the external monitor, except for the colors and contrast being terrible. Any color grey on a white background doesnt even seem to render. However if I look at that same image on the airs screen, I can see all of the grey colors perfectly. I have tested the hdmi cable and monitor on different computers and they work perfectly. I have tried three different adapters all with the same problems, leaving me to believe that there is something wrong with the macbook air itself and its ability to output a mini display port signal.

Does anyone know why I would be having a problem like this?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I'm now one of those who found a solution. Here's how I did it, even if it's been discused before:

I remembered my brother had a DVI to HDMI high quality cable and I asked him to lend it to me.

I then plugged the DVI end to my screen and the HDMI tip to my HDMI to MD port adaptor.

The screen was then completely noisy/grey like a TV without cable. I was giving up, but during my 2 minutes rant the screen suddenly came back to normal with great contrast/colors and everything was fine. The screen is still noisy (sometimes) when I plug it in, but comes back to normal after a minute or so.

So this is how it fixed it for me... I still hope Apple is working on this since it not normal to have this much trouble plugging an external monitor to a 1900$ computer!!

    Good luck folks.

Do you guys think this will help? It's a firmware update. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1551?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

How do you know if you need this or not? What happens if you install it and you don't need it? or if it's a step backwards, would your computer reject it or install it and set you back? There are not instructions there.

Hopefully that will force some public action from Apple!

This is really starting to drive me nuts. When I first saw this several months back, and discovered how widespread a problem it was, I figured it could only be a matter of time till Apple addressed the issue.  Like everyone else, I find it very frustrating that after purchasing what is touted to be a top of the line machine, it fails at such a basic function, and a company that prides itself on creating  products that "just work" and customer satisfaction has yet to even acknowledge the issue.  It'd be great if they fixed the issues with existing products before pushing new ones.

Hi guys i had talk with APPLE USA had 2 min.

They said thats this problem is software and give me 2 options

    A. change my mini per one new mini (intel video chipset) thats to me dont solve my trouble intel chipset dont work with video mapping and have shared memory thats makes lag in video projections.

    B. Refound me my money per mini

NO WAY becouse all my vjay tools and hardware are displayport or macosx softwares (modul8,madmapper etc..) i expend more than 2k i this stuffs software and hardware thats just works in macos ? NO REFOUND

this is not a solution to me, and i lost more than 15k USD in jobs thats i need refound and stay lost money becouse this crap products.

I´ll talk today to my lawyer to see what will be better solution to me, i´ll call to Consumer Rights Prosecutor thats i told many times becouse if we see in underlines apple dont have intention to fix HDMI output software trouble, this is to sell more APPLE MONITORS.

CMAV: the 80% of apple consumers (newbies) dont have more brain, they buy a BRANDING they dont said using 50% of hardware offer, just buy apple to said MY BRAND NEW APPLE.

Every time when i watch WALKING DEAD i think new apple consumers walking to buy new apple product eheheheh!

folks, repeating an earlier post for more recent visitors to this forum  - if you want Apple to take note, go to

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

and fill in as much as you can - I included this thread/discussion so they could see it wasn't just me.

I suggest EVERYONE do this - the more bug reports that get posted, the more likely it is that Apple will take heed, so EVERYONE reading this thread with the poor HDMI video issue, post a bug report as soon as you can!!!

I have another suggestion. Let's get this issue known to various tech-blogs, magazines and websites, such as Macrumors, Endgadget, Wired, Gizmodo, etc. I have just written about this problem to Macrumors and Endgadget, including a link to this thread. Please try contacting other major online media outlets that deal with computing and Apple devices (not only English-language ones, I believe that  people contributing to this thread come from many places across the world) and alert them to the problem. Perhaps if they will write about the problem, which seems to concern the whole mid-2012 macbook range (!!!) then Apple will feel under pressure to address the problem.

    Thanks.

I have also tested Ubuntu 12! and Works Perfectly! So Windows and Ubuntu Works; but the Native OS that comes with the computer that you pay for, won't work. This is nonsense.

Yep, that's the only solution, I think we all here used that workaround.

But this company todays became and reminds another company I used to be loyal. Imagine wich one.

I am trying to addapt to another OS. Already did with Android (no more iPhones), now I am going behind Linux. It works everhwere, even works perfect on the MBAir where OS X Display Drivers won't.

I too am having the same issue. Macbook Air Mid 2012 running 10.8.2. I was looking into getting one of the new mac minis, but I will not buy one until Apple resolves the hdmi output issue. I have also submitted feedback and linked to this thread.

so has anyone had any success with the MacBook Air/Pro Update 2.0 patch?

it claims to fix  "graphics performance"...

please post your experiences/assessments here - would be nice if the patch fixed this issue!!

no good - the MacBook Air/Pro Patch 2 didn't fix the problem - my MacBook Air (mid-2012) connected to BenQ 24" HD screen via mini-dp to HDMI still looks the same - washed out colours etc, so the issue remains for me...

interesting thing I noticed - when I took screen grabs (shift-command-4) of the HDMI and the DVI, they were identical - both excellent, so the system 'sees' the output to be the same, unlike our eyes that can see a HUGE difference...
