I called Apple Support. Very nice lady suggested I plug the monitor power cord direct into the wall instead of the UPS I use. Problem is apparantly sovled. She explained the monitor needs a good full power supply when connecting at the start and she suspects the UPS is not supplying that for some reason. I'll test for a few days but I am very optimistic that she has solved the problem. I'm happy.
