Apple have suggested I can use @icloud.com instead of @me.com.  What happens if my @me.com is my apple ID and used for Itunes?

Do I have to change apple ID as well it to the @icloud.com and do my purchases swap over?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7), 64 bit

It's all the same. You should be able to log in anywhere which requires your ID with either address. That said, very occasionally people have found that one works and another doesn't, even though it should, so if you find that just stick with the one that works.
