I downloaded the latest Software update for my iMac. (Snow Leopard) After the installation was finished, the mail program was unable to run, because it has the "wrong version". Also there is no Mac App Store anymore. Both programs show a different icon now and are no longer functionable. I moved these apps to a different folder and back as in the help indicated to do, but that didn't work for me. How can I fix the problem?

Regards

Henning

Follow the instructions in this knowledge-base article.

You should be on Mail 4.6 (1085)   If you aren't you will need to software update again or download Mail 4.6 separately.

There appears some confusion as to what you currently run.   Your profile mentions 10.7.4 (which ideally should be 10.7.5)  and here you mention an update, but bracketed Snow Leopard.  This could also affect which Mail you should be on.

    Could you clarify please?

    Hi,

thank you for the fast answer.

The computer I am working on runs OS X Snow Leopard and the error code is:

You are working with Mail-Version 4.5 (1084/1085). This Version can not run on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549)

I already reinstalled Mail over my Install DVD that came with the iMac. Also I downloaded again Safari and iTunes that also quited working. Although Mail was new installed it is stoll showing the error message mentioned above. I also used the software update and it comes back with the information, that all software is new. So my question now is:

    - is there a download from mail and where can I get it.

The other option would be to get Mountain Lion and install that and I hope that this is the salvation to the problem. But I would not like doing that because this is my parents computer and they are happy with Snow Leopard and are not easy in learning new things

Did you follow the step-by-step instructions in the article I linked?

Yes I Did. Mail is located in the mail folder. And actually I never moved it anyway. The only thing I found is, that it listst Mail 4.5 instead of 4.6 as indicated

OK, start at the beginning of the steps again, but this time first open Console.app and note the time you start. When finished, if Mail is not working, post all the console log entries after that time.

    I'll try doing that.

But, will installing Mountain Lion also solve the problem? What do you think?

    Hello henning77,

I'm going to back out from this thread now because Austin seems to have the right line to proceed with and it's better to keep to one helper unless a substantially different line of thought appears.

By the way, I would avoid Mountain Lion for now at least.   Get this one sorted out first.

You will be in safe hands with Austin.

That doesn't look like the console log - and I don't know enough for it to be helpful. A console log looks like this:

Changing OS to Mountain Lion is unlikely to fix whatever is the underlying problem, and will probably upset your parents.

    Hmm,

Sounds difficult. If even a new OS is not solving the problem...

Anyway. Thank you for your trouble! I really appreciate it!

The thing is, we don't know what the problem is, so we don't know that changing OS will fix it.

OK. Is there a copy of Mail.app in your applications folder? What version is it?

Is there a Mail icon on your Dock? If so, right-click it and choose Options/Show in Finder. What happens?

    Hi Kinsella1

I just went on with the new OS and it works. I set it up in a way, that it looks like Snow Leopard and my parents up to now, have not discovered the difference.

But thank you for your trouble.

    Regards
