Even though I go to previous recipients list and delete names, they still show up in the previous recipients list. can anyone tell me how to do this ?  It used to be easy and I may be missing something.

An address will reappear in the list as soon as you send an e-mail message to it. Is that what you're seeing, or do you see addresses that you haven't sent a message to reappearing in the list?

I can't duplicate that here. My suspicion would be that the file that holds the previous recipients list is corrupt, but unfortunately I don't know where that file is kept. I can't find a file with that data anywhere in the Mail folder.

It's not in the Mail folder. It is in the AddressBook folder in the user/Library/Application Support folder. Because that make sense.

Ahh, yup, there it is. So I would probably try quitting Mail, moving that file to the desktop and re-opening Mail.

Did you make sure to quit Mail before moving that file to the desktop? If not, you have to do that. Just closing the main Mail window won't do the trick, use the Quit Mail item in the Mail menu, then move that file.

If you are sharing your contacts on iCloud, these old contacts can still be appearing.

I already messed up things with iCloud settings; I am therefore not the right person to advise you about how to delete your unwanted contacts in iCloud (be careful not to loose everything).

well I found out that when you type a letter into the area you get what is in the address book. [...] This is different than it was in OS before lion and mountain lion.

Actually, that is exactly as it always has been. The autocomplete in Mail's To, Cc and Bcc lines has always pulled from two places: the Address Book (or Contacts now, in ML) and the Previous Recipients list.
