Another curious note that I just remembered.

When thinking about getting a Mac Pro for my home studio and Logic, I not only researched new but used systems on places like Ebay to try and save money. Can't tell you how many times I would run across audio/video shops selling 2010 absolutely tricked out Mac Pro's. Dual Six Core, 64MB RAM, Dual Graphics Cards etc. etc. A 2010 model...not a 2007 or 2005. Since it sounded odd to be getting rid of computers in 2012 that HAVEN'T REALLY CHANGED since 2010, I contacted some of the sellers with questions.

All gave pretty much the same answers:

"The computer is in excellent shape!"

    "A+++ working condition."

"All drives wiped and fresh install of OSX"

"Still over a year left on Apple protection care plan"

But here's the answer that troubled me most...."Nothing wrong with the computers...We're just making room for 'upgrades' to our studio."

If the Mac Pro hasn't "upgraded" in over 2 years what the heck do they mean by "upgrading" thier studio?

I'm starting to see that they were simply staying ahead of the curve or getting back on track with the industry's future and standards concerning hardware.

Good post Nusskappe. I feel like a few things are in question with apple, like how did they drop the ball with Maps for Iphone5 then making a public apology with a recommendation to use other apps? Wow! Would be nice to get an apology from Logic. It pains me that this company has taken a step back in quality assurance.

I'm not saying it's the way to go, I'm just saying "looking elsewhere" should not be discounted as an option.

Apple creates software to sell hardware, they are basically a hardware company with Mac's serving as dongles to exclusive software suites they've purchased or created. The good: Up until the last few years Apple had to support very limited hardware configurations, which made reliability a no brainer. The Bad: Now they have a much more expansive group of machines to support, older Intel hardware as well as new setups with vastly different architecture, it's starting to show as the OS is growing more cumbersome, especially the last few releases... and no matter what anyone says, the last few OS releases couldn't have been very well tested with Logic. Also, Apple seems to be closing in again, just an opinion but I think Apple would prefer everyone just stick with what's supplied by Apple, no third party hardware or software (including plugins). Doesn't speak well for pro support.

I have both quad core PC and Quad core MBP R. Working with Ableton during this dark time until Logic gets fixed has proven both platforms are good enough. Lets not forget that Logic was working on PC before Apple bought them, they had a good run for a few years but have dropped the ball in my opinion.

Get yourself a nice audio card and you should be making quality music with either. I personally prefer the Apple OS over windows but you defo get your moneys worth with PC hardware.

    Yep I know.

I took you comments as a well informed, logical (no pun intended) perspective on the given situation.

I'm just trying to re-educate myself...and be open to all angles and viewpoints.

I need and appreciate all angles and opinions at this point. I'm so dissapointed AND angry with this mess.

Well, in the tweaked, forum based reality, 50 angry users totally overshadow half a million users who don't complain... I've been in touch with 4 active Logic users lately, and none of them have had the lag problem or even heard about it. I have no idea how many users who have been - or still are - affected by the lag issues. The few I'm aware all use visually 'active' plugins from non-Apple sources.

Other DAWs forums are also loaded with reports of serious problems. People usually don't log into forums (including  this one) to say "hello, Logic ic working as expected'.

Apple hasn't claimed that the Logic 9.1.8 update cured the problem, PDQ1. They said that the update addresses this issue, and Apple isn't the kind of company who will state that you may still have such problems if you eg. use Waves or other 3rd part plugins.

Maybe they have made the changes they need to make, or maybe there will be more uodates - I have no idea. But if visually active plugs + (M)Lion is a problem, and Apple has changed what needs to be changed in their own plugins, this situation as such tells us nothing about how Logic and 10.8 will work with visually busy plugins from otehr companies.

THEY don't even know what's going on

    How would you know? :-)

I might take a look at Ableton. I have a few projects with deadlines I really don't want to miss and my Logic is pretty much unusable. I mean a 15 second video score with only a handful of tracks shouldn't be unresponsive for 5 - 10 seconds with each action I attempt.

i have also noticed that I don't seem to be able to get Logic to recognise my Focusrite plugin suite at the moment either...

the only visual plugs I have are Fabfilter Pro pack and I experience these issues even when I don't have the plugs open. I can provide a project file if necessary, maybe someone could see if they are having the same issue with the same project?

Yep. Me too. Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion the Focusrite plugin suite that came with my Saffire Pro 24 DSP doesn't show up. Tried many ways to make them work to no avail.

That said, with all the problems I've stuck with just using the native plugins in logic. (Still lags even just using Apple's plugins)

Another problem I've had since the update is that automation data is no longer working consistently.  For instance, if I automate the disabling of an effect plugin live sometimes it will see this and record the "bypass" data and sometimes it will not.  These kinds of inconsistencies are very frustrating.  And, btw, the lag issues I've experienced (and continue to after the update) are happening with Channel EQ, a native effect plugin.

Ok, so it's not just me forgetting how I installed that suite on Leopard... my wife and my 3 month old came into my studio earlier to see me tearing my hair out, eyes bloodshot because I work a night shift and instead of playing the piano for an hour or 2 before getting some rest I am frantically trying to put all these pieces back together without success

I read earlier about the uninstall/reinstall Garageband workaround, but my MBP shipped with Lion pre-installed and I don't want to uninstall something that I don't know how to reinstall... I did install the update when signed in here and it was after that I noticed that 4 plugs wouldn't load... didn't  tell me which ones. I had to open a few projects to see which ones didn't open.

Another problem I seem to have encountered is with marker placement. Like I have mentioned already, this 15 second video clip I'm 'scoring' (fast becoming the longest 15 seconds of my life) I placed markers at all the shot changes, colour coded so each of the regions correlate. But once I've zoomed in and out a few times, the markers don't seem to match up to the scene cuts I have painstakingly got down to the finest tick...

I am thinking now about the Time Machine back up I have on my iMac from 2010... I might boot to that until this all blows over... or blows up...

Just adding - does anyone think working in 32bit mode would make a difference? I might try that this weekend.

  • 326. Re: Major UI Lag in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on OS 10.8?
    MadDog15 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

No on the 32 bit mode question. Sorry.

Running in 64 should've technically helped. 32bit mode restricts the RAM usage of Logic to around 3GB. Even if you have say 16GB of RAM installed in your system, Logic will only utilize 3GB. Running in 64 lifts the restrictions and lets Logic use much more RAM if its available on your system. So long story short - whether your running in 32 or 64 the Lag problem still exists. It's an obvious question though. I know....I tried it too. :^)

    Forgot to add:

There's no noticeable difference in the Lag Problem when running 32 vs 64. Either way its a mess.

    Dear Logic-ers,

Yes.. the lag starts again soon after I install the 9.1.8 upgrade.

I found the application "Message" and a third party application"Line" will affect OSX when using together with Logic.

The worst situation is that it will become not-responding to a mouse click.

And then I will have no choose to "force-quit" all of them and start the OSX again-"reboot".

    I am on a Macbook Pro 5,2.

My another MacPro running 10.6 is somehow running Logic silky smoothly.

Hello Apple, do you know we the pro users are loosing our customers?

And further, we are loosing faith in you.
