Q: iCloud Backup Failure

I have an iPad3 that I purchased in the spring which is now running IOS6, I updated on the day IOS6 came out.

On October 17th I received a notification that my iPad hadn't been updated in 2 weeks.  This has never happened to me because I typically plug in my iPad at night and let it recharge and update over night.  I have it set to automatically backup when the iPad is plugged in and turned off.

I checked to make sure I had ample storage.  I had only used 2.6 GB of the 5.0 GB available.  So I tried the automatic backup again the next night.

It didn't work, my information showed that my last backup had been October 3rd.

So I tried to manually back up and got the spinning timer with no estimate as to time remaining.  So I figured it was going to take some time.  I left the iPad plugged into the wall and walked away.  I came back about 20-30 minutes later and the backup had stopped during that time and failed again.

I tried various suggestions that I've read on the forums, including deleting all my iCloud data and starting over with nothing but Calendar, Contacts and Reminder running.

I still have the same issue . . . the backup wheel keeps spinning, no estimate, no backup.

I've tried shutting down my iPad and restarting.  I don't know what else to try.

Despite the fact that I cleaned out my iCloud storage and it shows that I have the fully 5.0 GB available on iCloud, when I look at "Manage Storage" I do see in the "Documents & Data" secton the following information:

MyMedical: 9.1 MB (this is a Medical information app that I have on both my iMac and my iPad)

Pages: 1.3 MB (I also have this running on both my iMac and iPad)

iA Writer: 23.7 KB

I also show 20.1. MB in Mail although the switch for Mail in iCloud is currently turned off as it is for all the Apps mentioned above.

So does anyone out there have an idea?

Thanks!

I have the exact same oroblem, only difference is I have an iPad2, but I guess it works the same. Personally I found that I've only been having issues with it since the iOS6 upgrade.. I think that's the cause of all the problems.. Still if you can try to upgrade your itunes as well, maybe if it isnt the same version as the iPad and is failing to connect. If you find the solution please let me know!

I talked to Apple again today and they tried to recreate the problem on their end by signing into my icloud account on an ipad they had there. They were unable to backup to icloud, so they concluded that there is a problem with my icloud account. I suspect they somehow did something when they set up new icloud accounts for people with old mobileme accounts. Hopefully I'll have an answer tomorrow but it might consist of setting up a new icloud account, which means all my history and everything associated with it would have to be transferred over. Kind of a pain, but might be worth it.

My problems all started after the iOS6 upgrade as well.  From the start I felt that something changed after the upgrade that screwed everything up for me.

Lotu, I'm really curious to hear how it goes for you.  Please let us know what happens.

I talked to Apple again today and they are now blaming it on my Comcast modem. Comcast acknowledges the problem sort of here: http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/device.php?tier=-1&devid=296&e=0&d3=0&s=&so=&sc= 500

But I don't think this is actually the problem because the Apple guy was unable to backup to icloud when he logged into my account on an ipad and used their network.

I'm going to go try the backup at a different Wifi, maybe the Starbucks down the street, and if that doesn't work, then I think the problem must be with icloud.

Does everybody else having icloud problems use the Comcast modem in question?

I have that same Comcast device but I just got it a short time ago.  I had the Pages-backup-iCloud problem before and after I switched to Comcast.  It was no better using any one of 4 available connections at work (none Comcast).  Blaming it on the Comcast router seems like a stretch--what would be the third party DNS provider issue in using iCloud?

However, --good news--I am now on the second day in a row in which Pages updates right away and backup for my iPad is working!!!

The only intervening event was an iOS update from 6.0 to 6.0.1 yesterday morning.  Hope that did it.

Thanks for the link.  I have that exact model modem so I called Comcast to have it replaced.

I was unable to back up to iCloud from another location yesterday but perhaps I needed more time or perhaps there were other issues with that location.

At any rate, we shall see.  It would be sweet if changing the modem solved my issue.

I went to the local Starbucks and used their Wifi, and the icloud backup worked on both my iphone and my ipad, so I guess Apple was right and it was the Comcast modem. I tried it at a different place first and it didn't work, but the Wifi there was really slow (I also don't know if they use Comcast so they also could've been using the problem modem or another modem with issues). So if you're having problems, you might want to find a fast Wifi connection and/or make sure they're not using one of the problem modems.

I'll put in for a new modem at Comast and make sure that resolves the issue at home too.

    This is very encouraging!

I have a great deal of hope that my issue will be solved when Comcast replaces my modem.

I just wanted to let anyone reading this thread  know that having Comcast replace my modem did resolve my issue.

Don't even get me started on the awful run-around I have concerning my Comcast service appointment.  Long story made short - I was promised that the tech would be here between 8-10 a.m. and after 5 phone calls and promises that they would be here by 11 then by noon, then by 1 and finally by 3:45 p.m it is now 4:45 p.m. The tech just left.

Grrrrrr!  What should have been a 2 hour window ended up being an all day wait and a colossal waste of my time as well as endless frustration at getting the run-around.

But it's fixed.  So if you have Comcast service and the suspect modem, it's worth having it changed.

Thanks for letting us know. What brand/model modem did they give you? I'm getting mine replaced Monday (hopefully it's not an all day wait!) and want to make sure I get one that works.

I hope all goes well with your replacement.

I don't have an answer for this but I did want to let you know that you aren't likely to get help by posting a question in a thread that is about another issue.

It would be better to search for a thread where people are discussing a similar issue, you may find an answer already posted or at least find people who are discussing this who might help you.  Or you could start another thread specific to your issue if there isn't already a discussion of this issue.

Sorry I don't personally have an answer but hopefully by finding or starting another thread you can get your question answered.

Comcast switched out my modem. I now have a Netgear WNR1000 modem and a Arris WBM760 Wifi router, and those work with icloud backup on both my iphone and ipad, if anybody is looking for viable alternatives to the Arris TG862.

icloud is still a debacle though. I was working on something in Pages about 3 days ago and it still hasn't synced with the version on my imac. Pages was syncing all along, even when I had the backup issue, so no idea what's going on there. Notes also doesn't sync on my imac. It's synced between my ipad and iphone, so no idea why the imac is lagging.

icloud just isn't ready for primetime. Google Drive and Dropbox work seamlessly, so I know it's not me or my setup. icloud is just too much of a headache. I'm going to try to find alternatives, so I don't have to rely on it for anything.

After 2-3 days of instant response from Pages in updating to iCloud since the iOS update to 6.0.1 on my iPad, it's back to the old state of affairs -- Pages backs up to iCloud when it feels like it after an interval of a few hours to a few days regardless of which wireless connection I use.

As I type this,  I just got an update of my most recent Pages doc in good order.  Two days ago I could not get any of six docs to update. Wish I count count on future updating. The Pages-iCloud thing is just not very reliable and there is no good info as to why that is or what can be done about it.
