I just made a mistake with my iPhone5. I keep Cellular off (never had to with my prior iphones) when I am home on my wifi. Tonight I had to turn Cellular on for my Voice Mail (one small msg). Forgot to turn it off. I updated 6 apps. Checked DataWiz and found a spike of 14.7 mb.
Apparently the iPhone used Verizon Cellular instead of my wifi. APPLE fix this please.

I don't know how many times it's necessary to repeat this, but if the phone is asleep, meaning the screen is not on, WiFi is turned off to preserve battery - unless the phone is connected to power or cellular data is turned off. So if the phone was asleep, even it it had an available WiFi signal, any app that gets or sends data in background will use cellular data, not WiFi.
if you are correct on the wifi should remain connected if the phone is connected to power or cellular data is turned off, do you think I have a different issue?
When I am at work, I turn the airplane mode on since I do not get any receiption. However, my wifi still gets disconnected when the device goes to sleep mode thou.

But there is no other voice control. I used my Motorola bluetooth. All my phone says is that SIRI is not available, I have to turn on my celllular data connection. I turned it on, and spent 30 seconds on the phone. I was not able to turn off the cellular connection until I was able to stop my car (to keep my eyes on the road, you know), and during that time, I checked my data use, and it sent out 182 Kb and received 162 Kb of data, while I was driving, all without me doing any browsing. I turned off everything thatI could possibly turn off when I received a warning from Verizon that I was going to go over my data allowance. I keep my cellular oconnection ff all the time now. But what is the point of me having a bluetooth, when I have to fumble on my phone and turn my cellular on while drving just so I can make a phone call. Talking about accident risk. This is a headache.

But why does Siri have to connect to cellular connection when all I want is to use my bluetooth? I never needed cellular connection with my previous phone. Why am using data when all I need is a phone connection? This does not make sense.

So now day 10 post IOS 6.0.1 update and I have not received any excessive data usage. I know still say they have it but mine stopped.
I have downloaded many apps and streamed the occasional podcast and monitored the data usage for an hour after that to see if there is a "continuous retry affect" happening. So far soo good.
I do find the iPhone "sticks" to wifi more than before and seems to only use one connection at a time. Will see if the system is back to what it was.

I've got the latest 6.0.1 and Carrier 13.3 update is still not working. While on WiFi put your iPhone to sleep and give it a minute the turn on. Look quickly at your connection and you will see it switched to LTE when you turn off screen. Fix it Apple!

This is normal operation.. unless you have it plugged into power. The phone will not maintain WiFi contact while asleep on battery power.

And for my latest update since the... uh... update:
It is working MUCH better. Yeah, it still leaks a bit when it shouldn't. But there are no longer 30-40 mb spikes while on WiFi. I have now left on my cellular data for many days in a row. And wow... after four straight days of leaving it on, and using the phone normally, I have used LESS cellular data than I would see fly by in just a few hours.
I'm definitely happier. I'm now on track to use under 200 mb in a month as expected... compared to using ~200 mb per day before the update. And the only thing I have done differently than before the update is to use a lot more apps, and to leave cellular on all the time.
We're getting there!

It's disappointing to report that I have given up. I still leak at least one MB per day and no longer use my phone outside of wifi. Turning off cellular data is quite depressing but is the only way to stop at least 40 MBs drained of my 200MBs monthly. My phone works EXACTLY the same without the cell data on in wifi (except not getting visual voicemail) and with it off when not in wifi, none of Apple's delightfully designed surprises will pop up because I left the cell data off.
If only I could set a location reminder that also automatically enables cell data when not in wifi for when I leave work and leave home, and turns it off when I arrive. I am SICK of checking Datawiz and seeing the daily 1MB+ drain WHILE IN WIFI.
I have never been more disappointed by an Apple product. I know it is the IOS, but it reflects how I feel about the whole phone. There is not now nor has there been any "delight" from having my shiny new phone because of this.
I no longer believe in Superman, because Apple has failed me in this. And I no longer believe they will fix it. And this is what I will be telling people when they ask me about the iPhone.

Iphone 3GS. updated to iOS 6.0.1 Friday. Data usage until then about 300MB
Sunday Morning around 4am. Phone incredibly hot even though connected to charger and home Wifi network. Usage exceeds 3GB for month and extra 3.5GB. Total usage in 12 hours 6.5GB.
Sunday afternoon after receiving message from AT&T about excess data, turned off Cellular Data and 3G and limited to only Wifi.
Monday evening 2GB cellular data. Total data usage in 2 days 9GB????? W/T/F ???
Even when 3G and cellular data is turned OFF, 2GB used up?
Now, turned OFF Cellular data and Wifi and using it as a regular phone with texting and calling. Maybe will buy a regular phone and be done with all these useless charges. Someone should be held accountable here.
