It would be helpful if you tell us which os you are using.
You are SOL without your troubleshooting discs. If you have any utility discs use them.

Hi, I'm not sure what OS it is.. Not very helpful I am guessing! I have tried a safe boot, resetting the SMC, the PRAM and using the flash drive but still no luck. Unfortunately I have no idea what on earth I am doing, short of following steps I can find on forums. Do you know if you can buy generic utility disks or are they all specific to the device? Thanks

Not knowing what your os is very difficult regarding offering troubleshooting solutions. Most if not all the system discs are machine specific.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html

Thanks for the links, I think it's likely to be on 10.6 as the update for the original. The model number is A1286 if that helps? Thanks very much
