I've just learned that port 5900 is used by something called rfb on my new macbook pro (OS x 10.8.2).

Port 5900 is also typically used by Virtual Network Computing (VNC) server for remote access.

I'm not sure but believe this "rfb" connection is used by airplay mirrioring can someone confirm this?

If so can the port assignments be changed at the Macbook and Apple TV device?

And finally why would anyone else use this port knowing it is used by VNC?

AppleTV 2, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I doubt you can change it.  Even if you could find the right config file in the /etc/ folder changing it would break the connection for all the devices connecting to it.  If it really is attached to AirPlay you could try disable AirPlay to see if that releases the port.  By the way since these are Mac Book questions they should be in a fourm for that.  This one is for the AppleTV.
