I do IT for a school we currently have 120 macbooks that are shared amongst the children that are in constant use. The kids use mic inputs for use with iMovie and Garageband. Never had this happen.
What kind of mic are you using?
Have you tried different mics?
Maybe it's time to think about investing in a usb mic or interface.

basically I am running a line out of my fender amp, into a Yamaha mixing board, and direct out to the iMac via the mic input, while listening thru my headphones. I've used to software instruments successfully (prior to the recent outage) and haven't had a problem. I am at a loss here...

If your direct out from the mixer is anything higher then line level you could be overloading the mac inputs and frying the circuit. You should be using a line out or record out.

yeah. I'm definitely using a line out from the mixer. how can you tell what the line level is..?
