I have a Macbook Air (July 2011) model.  During setup, I am transferring about 140 GB data from my old laptop to the Macbook Air using the default Migration Assistant.  The screen says it will take 300 hours!!  Why is it taking so long via wifi network?  This is too painfully slow.

Since you are going over the wireless network, the bandwidth will vary and unreliable so don't expect blazing speed transferring large amount of data. I would suggest you use a SATA to USB to transfer your data over. For that amount of data it should take about an hour via USB.

Of all the ways you might transfer data from your TimeMachine backup to the computer, WiFi is the slowest. I always recommend that TimeCapsule users restore/migrate by temporarily connecting their computer to the TC with an Ethernet cable.

Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately, I could stop the migration but I am afraid that some of the data would be corrupted by terminating it, so I decided to let it run for a few days to complete the migration, now into the third day.  BTW, there is no ethernet port on the Macbook Air or I would have used that at the beginning.

But there is an Ethernet dongle. Had you thought to do some math you'd have realized that a wifi restore of 140 GB was going to take a long long time. Stopping migration won't damage the TM backup.
