iPhone 5 AT&T data usage spike (same as Verizon)

    I bought an iPhone5 from AT&T and having the same issue. The data usage spikes while within wifi range at home. Have to keep cellular data off until I need it. Its not accpetable. Apple should fix it asap.

    I have unlimited data and I went over 5GB within the 10 days of using iPhone 5, the reminding 20 days I was throttled to Edge connection and only used 400MB and it made the suck *** on how slow the connection was... AT&T claimed there isn't any problems but they credit me $30 to my acct? I was thinking "if there is t a problem them way are you giving credit to my acct?" Didn't complain, so I took it but called back after 2 days into my cycle and I'm already at 500mb... So I called back to AT&T and told them that my data usage is acting up again and I barely used my phone those 2 days.... I told them that I was doing the same things as I was I doing on my older iPhone and I never went over 2GB ever since owning the first iPhone... And she told me that notifications use a lot of data but I told I'm getting the same notifications as the older iPhone and she told me LTE uses more data than 4G & 3G cause its faster and used the analogy as V6 vs V8 engine on gas usage but told her that data and gas are different and for her to explain her analogy but she couldn't cause I knew she was lying... Anyways supervisor cleared everything up and told me that Apple and AT&T are working together to solve the problem and told me if I get throttled again to call back to customer care and they might be able to credit me... All in all I think there's something wrong with the iOS 6 software or the LTE connection or maybe both... And they try to see if i wanted to switch my Data plan from unlimited to pay per gb and i would never get throttled but i told them to kiss my *** I'm keeping Unlimited Data and I just wanted them to fix this problem that Verizon fixed immediately... Hope this help *call and complain and get ur credit if have unlimited data and been throttled.

    It's funny the stories they will make up, V6 vs V8 !?? LMAO .. and getting you to switch from unlimited !? wow.. they really think their customers are idiots !?

     

    I was waiting for them to ask me to upgrade from 2GB to 3GB .. they never did, else I may laugh.

     

    One thing I noticed though, the lady asked me "did you stream video? did you turn off all the apps ? did you turn off cellular data ?"  and then her tone totally changed after she "spoke to her manager"

     

    Its odd to hear them admit that AT&T AND Apple knows the issue... let me call Apple and tell them AT&T threw them under the bus .. LOL

    With 8 days to go in the current billing cycle my wife's iPhone4 exceeded the data limit. She's had an iPhone for several years and never came close to the limit until OS6 was loaded on her phone. I will contact AT&T again this morning and hopefully they'll have some news on a fix.

    I looks at my previous Verizon bills that showed no more than 2GB of usage ever. I had an iPhone 3,3G,4,4S

    I don't "use my phone now cause its new," as the operator at AT&T suggested.

    This is definitely an issue it shows I use 3gb already this new billing cycle.

    I have an ongoing battle with AT&T for this same reason.  I have a family plan and we all updated to iOS 6.  Suddenly our data limit was exceeded, which it hasn't come close to doing in 10 years!  AT&T swapped the SIM cards on all phones (said they were known to "leak" data) and turned off all Cellular Data.  It continued to measure data every hour on the hour, even when we slept!  They credited me $45 dollars, but I am still having the problem.  Just updated to iOS 6.1.  We shall see if this fixes the problem.

     

    I have had nothing but trouble with the iPhone since this last update, which ***** because it is a first in 10 years!

    I called AT&T this morning regarding this issue  and they told me it is a known issue with iOS 6.  I think this thing is being handled very poorly by Apple, and I would expect a "World Class" company such as Apple to Acknowledge the problem, Apologize for the problem and Assure it's customers that the problem will be remedied.  I get lots of emails from Apple for all kind of things, but nothing about this issue.  I expect more from Apple.  I have contacted them directly, since I have no idea how this forum is used by them.

    Since my last post here, I have not heard from AppleCare and what the trackers they installed on my found concluded. 

     

    Day before yesterday I had a friend let me know that she had just received her iPhone 5 in the mail and as soon as she turned it on was asked to do a software update to iOS 6.0.1 that claims to fix WiFi bugs that we are all plagued with.  Why didn't I get notified of this update?

     

    So I checked my Software Update and what do you know... there was an update available.

     

    Since my update I no longer find my phone jumping off WiFi and quickly switching from LTE to WiFi when I wake the phone.  My billing cycle is almost over this month and I'm nearing 1.2gb of usage on a 2gb plan.  This is still more than I normally used on my iPhone 3GS and my iPhone 4 which clearly shows that there was a data leak on the phone. 

     

    I'm glad they finally issued a software update, although only the next few weeks will tell me if it actually works.  Please check your Software Update section to see if you're all able to download the update.

    Also, you could download an app called Onavo Count - I've recently got it for my iPhone 5, and it lets you know what apps use data and how much.

    I have been struggling with this same issue. I am using 10 GB per day now after turning off cloud, notifications and LTE. I burned through 65% of my plan in 1st 10 days. I upgraded to 5 from 4s and have not changed my habits. I used less than 50% prior to upgrading to iphone 5. AT&T is being supportive by crediting me. However I don't have time to deal with this. I only use map and email a couple times a day. Most of my time is spent using wireless. I am curious why apple is not responding to this issue. If I can't use the features that I bought the iphone for what is the point.

    When you use maps, do you use the 3D "flyover" setting?  I found that feature burns through data at an unbelievable clip (100+ MB in under 10 minutes of playing with it over Manhattan).  As an aside, that fact renders it all but useless for me when not on wifi.

    I'm experiencing the same time. Updated from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5 (and iOS 6) and saw data usage spike. Never used more than 200 Mb. After iPhone 5 I'm always above 200 Mb, this month two times ($15 x 2). The first month I thought perhaps I played more with my new phone, but it's repeating the second month. And what uses up more data are big chunks of data at random times. For example, two days ago the phone used 60 Mb at 2am, where I was at home asleep. So, suddenly a 1/3 of my data plan used for I don't know what. Last night after I went to sleep, the phone used another 20 Mb. And so on.

     

    Now I tried to update to 6.0.1 and see if it improves.

    Mine seems to be doing ok now after updating to 6.0.1. it's been a week since my new cycle started and thus far, I have used 122 mb only over cellular. This time last month I went over 2gb+ already.

     

    Whatever Apple did .. thanks. But of course we will never hear you admit to any of this. Lets see if AT&T will credit me.

    Updating also seems to have solved the problem for me. Previously I would have these big chunks of data sometimes, once 60 Gb in the middle of the night. That seems to have stopped. On the other hand, now I see small amounts off data every 10 minutes, a few kilobytes. Perhaps iCloud updates? It happens even when I am on Wi-Fi. Still, it doesn't add up to to the huge chunks previously.

     

    A T & T credited me for the second month of overage. Now I think they should also do that for the first month. It was a system failure, not me using the data.

    Well, a fair number of days passed without any odd data downloads, however last week we had one unexplained 100Mb download, and then this morning one of 200Mb...  Will take another look at the settings to see if something (iCloud, etc), turned itself back on...

     

    It's almost as though something wants the phone to reach it's limit before the end of the billing cycle.  We'll be taking this phone back to AT&T for some answers this week...

     

    Using iOS 5.1.1...
