I don't know if that's the problem because usually when it sleeps, meaning the screen turns black, I can press any key and it will return to the normal screen. Now, it turns black and no matter what button I press the screen will stay black, unless it is powered off. The white light on the bottom of the mac just turns a bright white and stays like that instead of going on and fading like normal when it is sleeping. I hope this makes sense. It's a bit hard to explain. I never had this problem before; it just started all of a sudden.

I tried to do the SMC reset. I took the battery out and put it back in; it worked and then the same thing kept happening. I've been trying a few things, unfortunately none of them are working.

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for OS 10.6.8 and under. If you are running 10.7 or 10.8 run Disk Repair from Disk Utility on your Recovery System. It shows you how in the link.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.
