Do you mean the Thunderbolt port?  The new Mac Minis have that or HDMI.  No DVI ports to be found (aside from the HDMI to DVI converter dongle).

Thunderbolt and Mini Display Port (mDP) use the same connector.

I still haven't had any problems since I switched to a mDP to DVI adapter.

No flicker on one using 2*2GB Apple or 2*8GB Corsair & HDMI anyway.

Still dropping to black for a split second a multiple times a day and getting snow // glitch a couple times a day too.  Called AppleCare back after I tried with a second monitor and still got the blackouts/glitches going HDMI-to-DVI using included adapter.

Second time I called was much better service, although they still have no reports of this issue on their end.  Nada from engineering, etc., so again they've said to either hit the Genius Bar or return // exchange the Mini.

I may just return it until this is sorted as people are reporting exchanging only to have the same problem.  Running heavy recording software here and can't afford the lost couple of days migration // authorization, etc.

Fluffy - where to start. Maybe I've just been lucky but I've had 3 PCs from different makers in 15 years. They've given no trouble until bits start to fail (as expected) at around 5 years. Neither have I had a problem with Windows. So you'll excuse me if my views are coloured by past experience.

I have had other pieces of consumer electronics that failed, were replaced and hey-presto, the replacement was trouble free. Not my experience here.

I don't care about Apple's customer satisfaction ratings. They have failed me so it's irrelevant to me. Apple also has a history of trying to weasel out of statutory customer rights, so I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

Put up with the fault? They must love you.

Amen, but I bet they've pulled everybody onto this & are burning the midnight oil... sad though.

I'll also chime in on this. I bought the low tier 2012 MM a couple weeks ago and I've been experiencing the snow issue ever since. I've tried three different brands of HDMI cables, none of which makes a different, and I've got the latest OS updates. The MM is directly connected to my TV via HDMI. Kind of frustrating when my old white Macbook that I "upgraded" from is more reliable than a brand new MM.

I get what you're saying, Mossy, but to say "Never again" just seemed a bit drastic to me - but hey, it's your money.  I've been programming for over 30 years now, so I assume I'm probably prone to more hardware failures, just due to sheer volume of systems I touch.  While I would agree with some posters here who say that this kind of wide-spread problem should have never made it out, I also understand that the testing in place probably didn't account for intermittent situations like those we're experiencing.  Not an excuse, but certainly a reason.

As for "putting up with the fault", I'm certainly not accepting it, have already reported it to Apple, and will be exchanging for a new (fixed) model when it comes out.  I'll probably be taking mine into a service center to see if I can help them isolate the problem.  In the mean time, and between service visits, I'll keep it, as the HDMI out is on my secondary monitor, with the DP out feeding my main monitor, and not affected.  So, in my case, it is only a minor annoyance until it is fixed.  I completely understand my case may not be typical.

Fluffy - cheers for replying. The "never again" comment was made in the heat of the moment. Even so, the hurdle for another Apple purchase is pretty darned high now. It's not so much the failing hardware that really bugs me. It's the attendant waste of time... set up, calls to support, clean reinstall, return to store, repeat. It pretty much wiped out a weekend.

Then there is also the gap between expectation and reality. Apple sells itself as a premium product and charges accordingly. When it fails to live up to that, it is in trouble.

Using the good old statistical method of the "sniff test" I would have expected this fault to show up in testing. I'm in Australia and hit 2 for 2. I guess some of the others on this thread  (and others that have appeared on Macrumors etc) are in the USA and Europe and had a similar experience. It has shown up on different specs, both store bought and ordered. Even with this limited self-selecting sample, the odds of it showing up in testing improve markedly.

    Hi, I'm having 1sec drop-outs too.

With a small difference: most of you report a blackout, sometimes followed by snow.

My drop-outs are very similar, but go to a blue screen. Anyone else having a blue screen instead of black? I have my MacMini for a week now, but didn't have so much time this week: three days i've used it for a couple of hours. First day: no problems, second day: twice (10 mins after booting, and then a few hours later while watching video with VLC). Each time just a second or less drop out. Today I finally have time to dig into this problem and read all 10 pages of this thread so far.

    And these too:

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct12/102912.html

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/nov12/110212.html

While reading this thread I've had it happen again: this time more disturbingly. Over a period of 10 seconds, it happened 3 times in a row! Before this happened I was in doubt if I remembered right about the color being blue, but now I'm sure. I switched of my samsung HDTV  (in standby mode actually) about 10/15 minutes before this happened.

    My setup:

    * MacMini (late2012) quadcore i7 - 16GB Kingston Ram - 5400rpm 1TB apple HDD

    * Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM monitor - connected with  v1.4 HDMI cable > Moshi HDMI>MDP adapter (brand new) > Thunderbolt port

    * Samsung HDTV - connected with v1.4 HDMI cable to HDMI port MacMini

(Don't know where I can find which bootrom (EFI) and SMC version I have...)

What's the best step to take to register this problem with apple, to make sure they know I'm experiencing this from week 1? Don't feel like shipping it back immediately, maybe a solution is just around the corner...

In case anyone's interested in what the console log spit out in these 10 seconds triple drop-out, here it is:

I experienced both black and blue screens (no, not from beating the heck out of it  ).

Returning the built-to-order mini to the Apple Store Tuesday. Will see if they've even heard of this issue and find out how easy/hard it is to get a refund.

Forgot to mention the unsatisfying colors too. When I first connected, the white was way too bright and colors way too saturated. Is this what you people mean by "washed out" (I'm not native english speaking)?

I solved it the first day a little bit by reducing the contrast of my monitor a lot (to 40/100) and Brightness to 50/100.

Prior to above mentioned triple dropout I had improved the colors a little more with the Color Sync calibration function, although the first step of this process didn't work as it's supposed to work: When I put contrast on maximum, the screen was so bright that I couldn't get any good results adjusting the brightness, even with brightness on 0/100 it was still bright. So I put it back to the values above, and proceeded from there, and could improve a little, so that the color saturation is less ridiculous now, it's acceptable now, but nothing like the image quality I always got when hooking up my MacBookPro (mid 2010) to the same monitor & HDTV. I think a graphic artist or photographer would not be happy with the image quality.

I called this new calibrated profile AC-001.

In above posted console log you can see it switch between the default HD 709-A profile, and the newly created profile multiple times, for instance at the end.

No idea if this would be related to the problem...

Disappointing to have to deal with this problem after paying a premium price for a product.

Anyway, I left a review of the newest Mac Mini on Amazon.com. In it I spoke about this whole display problem. Here is the link if someone also would like to review the product and your experience with it: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD387LL-Desktop-NEWEST-VERSION/dp/B007476KRY/ref=sr_ 1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352769334&sr=1-1&keywords=Mac+mini

I wrote the review to let people know about the issue, not because of any sort of hate. And hey, the more people know about it, the quicker Apple would probably fix it. :P
